Wally has recently launched Galma, the first hull of wallywind110, a new model in the performance cruiser range along with wallywind130 and the wallywind150. A 33-meter superyacht that represents the pinnacle of nautical innovation and design, masterfully blending the elegance of a blue water cruiser with the capabilities of a high-performance racer. Luca Bassani, founder and chief designer of Wally, called it “the ultimate flush deck” in terms of possible size. Sleek and villainous, with water lines designed by judel/vrolijk & co and a design created in collaboration between Wally and studio Santa Maria Magnolfi, “wallywind represents a momentous step for Wally’s history,” said Stefano de Vivo, managing director of Wally and CCO of Ferretti Group, based on a semi-serial platform, which allows the boat to be built before it is even sold, lowering construction costs.
How is the new Wallywind110
Externally it has a sleek, clean line with just a hint of a deckhouse. Actually, the layout is typical of a raised saloon, because it has the central engine room and above the saloon, however, the design remains that of a flush deck. Behind this small deckhouse, another unique novelty on a boat of this size, is 80 square meters of cockpit, whose furniture is all removable, not fixed but simply resting on the deck. Thus, thanks to this “open space,” where you can freely decide whether and how to arrange seating and tables, the boat expresses its dual soul: cruising with its lounges forward and aft of the wheelhouse and racing when stripped of everything. A concept and innovation that stems from Esence, the 143-foot (44-meter) 2006 Esence but is now materialized on a significantly smaller boat.
“Wallywind110 is not simply a superyacht that promises to deliver great performance,” explains Luca Bassani. “Indeed, Wally has always been synonymous with performance as well as design. In fact, the careful study of the deck spaces of the wallywind110 resulted in an 80-square-meter cockpit completely cleared of technical equipment (moved to the stern) comparable to that of a sailboat at least 60 meters long. The owner and his guests can then relax on sofas, sunbeds, and seating. Not forgetting the other two lounge areas, which are developed respectively on the ‘sea terrace’ at the far stern and on the foredeck“.
Design and technology as a function of the boat
In the design of wallywind110, the renowned naval racing architecture firm judel/vrolijk & co. was responsible for making the ideas and concept of this performance blue water cruiser a reality. “
The real gene behind the Wally DNA is performance
” explains Rolf Vrolijk. “This is not the first project we are working on with Wally, already we had also dealt with Wally 101 which is kind of the prototype of wallywind110 and the series. While the former is a hull intended for pure performance, this series of boats is aimed at an audience that wants a boat for cruising the Mediterranean. It must be a hull that is easy and fast to steer, both in strong and light winds.“
The rig, as well as the hull, is made entirely of carbon, “a material that is used not only for its lightweight characteristics but also as a graphic display, whose fiber and texture give the boat its identity,” says Valentina Magnolfi of the Santa Maria Magnolfi studio. “Wally’s key is to keep, even in terms of design, only what is needed. If a detail, a material, is to be on a boat it needs to have a meaning, a function. The useless things, you don’t need” adds Federico Santa Maria, Valentina’s partner.
Despite being a dedicated cruising boat, wallywind110 is equipped with a high-performance, all-carbon rigging, and there is a choice of three types of keel: a 4.5-m fixed keel, a 3.95-6.10-m telescopic keel, and a 4.50-6.80-m hi-tech lifting keel. Indeed, not surprisingly, the ballast-to-weight ratio of 40 percent. Of course, as on every Wally, this hull is equipped with the underwater anchor and the hydraulic system with Magic Trims, for adjusting the mainsail and jib sheets, two trademarks of Wally.
