The latest generation of sailboats are getting faster, more technological, and higher performance. It is an evolution we certainly see on America’s Cup superboats, but also on hulls that tackle offshore racing such as the Ultim, Imoca or Class40, and progressively on new high-end production boats as well. On-board instrumentation also has to adapt to these new types of boats, where navigation is different and, above all, the skipper’s task is very different. To exaggerate, we could say that, with all the adjustments a skipper has to monitor (including foils), he almost doesn’t helm anymore. And that’s where the new autopilot from France’s Madintec comes in.
At the heart of the MADBrain system is AI (Artificial Intelligence) software that can optimize the rider’s work and improve as it is used. It was developed by a team composed of AI-savvy engineers and computer scientists and former racers. Thanks to MADBrain’s proprietary software, it always knows what adjustments it needs to make to the rudder to optimize the course by reading speed, position, and wind data, but most importantly by continually adjusting to actual sea conditions. He is the one who decides for himself whether the boat should speed up or slow down based on wind and wave conditions, managing the boat’s trim even in the most challenging conditions and avoiding excessive heeling.
The autopilot that learns

Once installed on one’s boat MADBrain calibrates itself and as it is used in navigation it works better and better, ensuring performance and safety. The software reads data from sensors to understand how the boat behaves in certain conditions, so it learns how to react better and better in the future and adapts more and more to the boat on which it is installed. The system is already popular in its home country of France, but several Italian skippers have also decided to install it on board, most notably Ambrogio Beccaria on the Class40 Allagrande Pirelli and Giancarlo Pedote on Prysmian Group.
How to install
MADBrain is a processor, a “little box” that installs unobtrusively on board. In addition to the processor, the control that controls the autopilot needs to be installed, after which the system communicates directly via NMEA2000 with the sensors and electronics already installed on board from some of the major manufacturer brands (such as B&G and Garmin), and you are immediately ready to win at regattas!
