Those who need to buy or replace their tender’s outboard motor today are asking themselves: is it time to opt for an electric model or is it better to stick with the classic internal combustion engine? Who has the upper hand, the traditional or the new? Solving this dilemma is not easy, and much depends on each owner’s use of their tender. Then, of course, there are other factors to consider, such as environmental issues.
SVB Marine
can help you choose your next outboard motor.

Thermal outboard

The thermal outboard motor is still the most popular choice (at least in Italian waters) for tender propulsion. Certainly among the reasons is the fact that people are used to imagining-when they think of an outboard-a heat engine, but not only that.

The advantages of thermal over electric are to be found in the higher power output for the same hp (equalized), which allows a tender propelled by a thermal outboard to reach a higher speed. This also means having higher performance when facing rough sea conditions, thus more safety and maneuverability. Also, if you choose to buy a larger tender tomorrow , there will be no need to change the outboard as well.

The most important issue, however, remains that ofrange, which in the case of thermal outboards also allows long distances to be covered, while in the case of electrics it forces calculations on power and miles to be covered.

Choosing between a thermal and an electric outboard is not always easy, partly because there is an ever-increasing supply. This is why SVB Marine compares thermal and electric outboard motors in its test.

Electric outboard

The first factor that positively affects the choice of electric is the environmental issue. An electric outboard does not pollute while in use, and for these reasons it is allowed to be used to enter even many marine areas and zones where otherwise boating would be prohibited. More and more areas are banning the use of traditional heat engines, many in Italy as well. A second very important factor is that of quietness: an electric motor produces almost no noise pollution, especially when compared with a thermal one.

Manufacturers of electric outboard motors are increasingly striving to make products that can compete with thermals on the side ofrange, thanks to increasingly high-performance batteries, and weight, thanks to better components.
