One of the most delicate and strategically complex phases of the Quebec – Saint Malo, namely the exit from the St. Lawrence River, is nearing completion. This is a peculiarity of this transatlantic, which starts inside the St. Lawrence and has 500 miles of river to navigate before reaching the Ocean.
Excellent news for Italian sailing, with our three Class 40s in the top six positions: Ambrogio Beccaria leading with Allagrande Pirelli, Alberto Riva fifth with Acrobatica and Alberto Bona sixth with IBSA. Beccaria took the lead in the race almost immediately in the first 24 hours, and now leads the leaderboard by more than 300 miles. A “fragile” lead, however, because the leading group is packed within tenths of a mile, with boats marking each other on sight, and 15 boats within just 10 miles.
Quebec – St. Malo, now comes the Ocean
From tomorrow the scenario will change, there will be no more land in sight, and the start of the oceanic part ofthe Quebec Saint Malo will be upwind, against a strong northeast, with the Class 40s then likely to go north, to contour a depression and look for leading swells.
A regatta that promises to be intense, with a leading group including, in addition to the Italians, Frenchmen Ian Lipinski, Achille Nebout and Fabien Delahaie. As we have already seen in the last transatlantic, in the Class 40s, the gaps, barring caricatures, tend to be very small, especially at the head of the fleet, with the races turning into long melees.
This time the crewed setup of the Quebec Saint Malo will help in the running of the boat, and it is a safe bet that the pace in the Ocean will be even higher than usual.
