We were at Marina Cala de Medici to try out the new Y8, the latest hull in a series of 80-foot semicustoms produced by German shipyard YYachts. A bluewater cruiser with a Mediterranean style, the latter feature expressed by a sporty sail plan, with some important new features compared to previous models in the series.
YYachts is one of the international shipyards specializing in the construction of custom and semi-custom sailing superyachts, the style and concept of which was devised by the volcanic Michael Schmidt, former founder of the Hanse brand, racer and sailor, one of the men who influenced modern cruising boat styling.
YYachts are never quite the same, because each owner brings his own vision and style of sailing to the project, and so in this Y8 so many things have been rethought: the hull, which now bears the signature of Javier Jaudenes, the cockpit is sheltered by a taller paramare, and the sail plan has been completely rethought, the backstay has disappeared but there is a Square top mainsail.

Y8 – What boat is
This 80-foot yacht uses the same full-carbon hull as Y8 and offers new options such as a tender garage with a wider opening and a more minimalist design. With its well-protected cockpit, the new Y8 is a yacht for comfortable transatlantic passages but is equally suitable for owners eager to race. From a technical point of view, unlike other 80-foot hulls, this Y8 is without a backstay. This allowed it to be fitted, as on Y7, with a Square Top mainsail, which provides more power in light Mediterranean breezes.
