Grand Soleil Cup 2024

Sunshine, beautiful boats and a strong mistral: all the conditions are in place for a spectacular Grand Soleil Cup (starting today) in Porto Cervo. Nearly 40 boats will compete in the regattas of the event organized by the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda and Cantiere del Pardo, to be held on Saturday, June 22 and Sunday, June 23. We are present at the dock to tell you about them.

Grand Soleil Cup returns to the Emerald Coast

The event dedicated to Grand Soleil owners returns to the Emerald Coast for its 22nd edition, 17 years after the last time in 2007. It will be the Maddalena Archipelago with a very sustained Mistral(20-25 knots expected) that will be the beautiful backdrop for this weekend’s sailing and shore events.

What boats there will be

Nearly 40 boats released from Cantiere del Pardo are expected to start the Grand Soleil Cup. This afternoon the Skipper Briefing was held on the YCCS rooftop terrace and we were able to peek a bit among the fleet what boats were present, from Italy (also from the Adriatic, such as GS 44 Athirat from Trieste and GS 43 Seawolf from Rimini) but also from Spain, France, Monaco and Puerto Rico (GS 44 Lazy Dog).

Definitely worth noting among the registered boats are the two new flagships of Cantiere del Pardo, the Grand Soleil 72 Pantarei 2 and Shanti. They are not the largest boats in the race, however, as the record is held by the Grand Soleil 80 Essentia, about 26 meters long. Other entries include historic models such as the two GS 42 Gilda and Tobalù del Mar (designed by German Frers) or the GS 45 Bucentaure 2 signed Judel/Vrolijk. However, there is no shortage of newer models such as the Grand Soleil 40 (Fra’ Paolele and Yankee R) and 44 (Lazy Dog) designed by Matteo Polli and Nauta Design.

The regatta program

Tonight there will be a cocktail reception for the crews, but tomorrow we start in earnest. After the briefing in the morning, the first sail of the Grand Soleil Cup is scheduled to start at 12 noon, which will be brought forward to 11 a.m. on Sunday. On Saturday evening there will be the usual gala dinner for the crews, in the YCCS restaurant.
