Luna Rossa crosses American magic in Barcelona

First practice on the Barcelona race course for Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli Team, which for the first time crossed paths, at a distance, with the other challengers, and in particular American Magic. As reported in the official spy reports these were de facto distance crossings not. programmed nor particularly sought by the two unions, not least because the Protocol prohibits challengers from lining up boats in the sea for more than 20 seconds, as well as navigating jointly around buoys.

So many points of interest, however, starting with the Helmsmen fielded by Luna Rossa: Ruggero Tita, after winning another world gold medal with the Nacra 17, also took over the wheel of the AC 75, he who in the first a phase of testing the boat in Cagliari was instead busy with the Olympic class races paired with Caterina Banti. The trimmers, on the other hand, were the “usual” 3: Umberto Molineris, Andrea Tesei and Vittorio Bissaro. More alternations in the cyclists’ positions, where Bruno Rosetti, Enrico Voltolini, Paolo Simion, Emanuele Liuzzi, Luca Kirwan and Nicholas Brezzi took turns.

Luna Rossa at work on foils

Luna Rossa’s foils were probably equipped with cameras (the two vertical elements above and below the foil blade. Photo Recon.

However, the other novelty concerns the foils: Luna Rossa has been sailing with two almost equal appendages for a few outings now. We write almost because there was actually a small difference, namely the size of the central “bulb”, which varied slightly in the two, one being thinner and the other slightly heavier. It is also interesting to note how the foils have been equipped with cameras; in fact, one notices hydrodynamically shaped elements placed above and below the foil blade, which are most likely video supports to analyze the work of the appendage in the water, both on the upper and lower surfaces.

Element that confirms how much this is still in the midst of a development phase, where the design team is fine-tuning the development of the appendages, which yes can be partly modified but which, it is worth remembering, will be limited to only 3 pieces, the pair to be used in the boat plus a spare foil. No team will be allowed to build more than 3; however, you can partially modify them. And that is what Luna Rossa is likely working on, which is to develop the best possible shape that manages to combine flight efficiency with boat speed.
