What a weekend of sailing at Marina di Cala de’ Medici! After the VELA Cup party and the awarding of the Sailor of the Year 2024 on Saturday, crews took to the water on the 26th for the Triton Cup, the first regatta to promote Natura 2000 marine and coastal sites, sponsored by the LIFE A-MAR NATURA2000 project.
Good first for Triton Cup
It is no coincidence that Cala de’ Medici has been a Blue Flag for more than ten years, attesting to the environmental quality of tourist-bathing areas. Sunshine, flat seas, a nice mistral that never exceeded 7-8 knots, a course starting in front of the Marina di Cala de’ Medici in Rosignano Solvay, buoy in Chioma and return to Rosignano for the more than 30 participants in the first edition of the Triton Cup. Not bad at all! In real time, the first to cross the finish line was Alois Neukirchen‘s Mylius 66 RS Schorch, followed by the Rodman 42 Cheyenne and Bruno Veronesi’s Swan 78 Azzurro.
Authors of a flawless race – and for this reason Overall winners of the Triton Cup – were the boys of Enrico Dho’s First 36.7 Sur, fourth in real time!
Two Sailors of the Year at the Triton Cup
There was also quite a “parterre de roi” of sailors at sea: think of the fact that there were even two Sailors of the Year in the regatta: Luca Rosetti, newly elected winner of the most coveted prize in Italian sailing (aboard the Rodman 42 Cheyenne he conducted a perfect race: it could not have been otherwise given his talent!), and Dario Noseda, winner in 2018 after crossing the Atlantic Ocean in a tiny Star.
Dario was aboard one of the two flagship boats of the Triton Cup. Along with him were many children former cancer patients who – in their words at the award ceremony – had a wonderful experience as part of the Sea Therapy, in collaboration with the Pediatric Oncology Department of the Modena Polyclinic, which offers healing and rehabilitation paths that combine the beneficial effects of sports practices with the advantages of spending time at sea, in nature.
The app for discovering our sea (and more)
Finally, during the Triton Cup awards ceremony, the Amar Sea Life application , an innovative tool for disseminating the European Natura 2000 network, was presented. The app-downloadable here for Android and here for iOS, in fact-allows users to discover the geographic location of Natura 2000 marine and coastal sites and provides a description of the site, habitat, fauna and flora. It is designed to actively engage sea enthusiasts: you can share your discovery of places by taking photos and uploading them directly to the app.
And now we come to the rankings and all the winners of the first edition of the Triton Cup.
