A hard-fought J/70 European Championship is taking place in Cala Galera with 84 monotypes entered, a strong Italian presence and more than 10 nations represented on the water. Not bad for a monotype that in recent years has somewhat felt the arrival of the RS 21 class from a numerical standpoint.
This European, however, brought an excellent fleet to the water both quantitatively and qualitatively, with many top champions on the water. At stake for the continental title in Cala Galera are many big names of Italian sailing, between offshore and monotype, such as Lorenzo Bressani, Gabriele Benussi, Hugo Rocha, Giulio Desiderato, just to name a few.

We were talking about a hard-fought championship, and that is what emerges from the results partials, with the first 4 races being won by as many different boats. Those who win one regatta may well stumble into 30th place in the next, confirming how compact the fleet travels and it only takes a few details to make the difference between a top 10 position and a much lower one.
Racing so far has taken place in medium wind conditions, the leader in the provisional overall standings is Alessandro Molla’s Viva, with Gabriele Benussi aboard.

Just two points behind is the first Corinthian crew, Sofia Giondi’s Wanderlust; third are the Americans (competing in the Open classification) of Good to Go. The Corinthian category is quite thick, with more than 30 boats out of the total 84. The Championship will conclude on May 25.
