“Some fed up with rating systems that require you to prepare your boat in a specific way and every year the rules change. I was used to in the Adriatic, where everything is much simpler, you race in real and first come, first served wins. In fact, if it were up to me, I would eliminate the awards altogether. I go sailing to have fun, and the VELA Cup for me is a party.”
The spirit of the VELA Cup
Bruno Veronesi, owner of the Swan 78 Azzurro(first to cross the finish line of the VELA Cup in Chiavari and ready to participate in the Cala de’ Medici leg on May 25/26 as well) sums up in a few words the true spirit of the most crowded regatta/festival circuit in Italian sailing.
“The VELA Cup is a perfect event, regardless of the technical level of the sea race, because it attracts boats out of ports that would otherwise be left to ‘die’ at the berth.” This is told by the great sailor Ciccio Manzoli, who has done so many regattas. Just think, he was the first Italian to win the Ostar, the legendary solo transatlantic, in 2005 with his trimaran Cotonella.
Ciccio participated in the last VELA Cup in Tigullio and fully captured the spirit: “I recommend everyone to participate in the VELA Cup. Even, indeed especially, to those who have never done a regatta with their boat. There are no complications, no certificates, no cards. It’s a party for all sailors“.
Two prestigious endorsements-a great entrepreneur (Veronesi was head of the AIA group) who goes sailing for fun and a great sailor-to sum up the secret of the VELA Cup’s success. Anyone can participate, from the microderivative to the superboat, almost anyone can win, there are a ton of raffle prizes, the award ceremony is a celebration.
