5 used boats from 7.32 to 17.21 m
Today we have scouted for you five beautiful used boats from 7.32 to 17.21 m. They are “beautiful” for different types of owners. There is the sportboat icon, those for the pure cruiser, those for perfomance cruisers, and those for aficionados of old IOR glories. We present them in ascending order of length. A safe used car: guarantees the Sailing Newspaper!
J/24 – 7.32 m – Little big icon
The first of the used boats we offer is a small, large historic Classic Boat by Giornale della Vela. An icon of sailing. We are talking about a J/24 (7.32 x 2.71 m) that is perfect as a first boat, even for racing fun.
Approximately 7,000 have been produced since 1977, and it is the most widespread monotype in history. The idea came to U.S. Rodney Johnstone, who had a fixed idea in his head: to have small, inexpensive, but still real bulbous boats with 4 to 5 crew give away to equal arms.
Lots of J/24s sail in Italy and Europe, and there are still, after nearly 30 years, many fierce regattas. It is a very fast boat in light winds, which becomes difficult to steer in strong winds. Below deck four spartan bunks allow for short cruises as well as fun day sailing. Easily wheeled with special trolleys that tilt the hull to contain the width in 2.50 m, so it can be transferred to the street without the need for permits.
The model under review, which can be seen in La Spezia, Liguria, is from 1984 but is in excellent condition (having always been kept on the ground) and is equipped ready for use. The price is attractive.
Delphia 29 – 8.6o m – Comfort does not mean “nail”
We remain in the world of watercraft with the second of the boats used under the lens today. A Delphia 29 (8.60 x 2.98 m) 2004 design by Andrzej Skrzat that remained in production until 2007.
The boat from the Polish shipyard Delphia Yachts, which has now abandoned sailing to focus exclusively on the world of Central European electric powerboats, was quite successful among the “unregistered” because of its convenience, not surprisingly the shipyard initiated a “reissue,” also by Skrzat in 2014.
We were saying about comfort, guaranteed by the generous volumes below deck: the solution from the designer was to raise the deckhouse. Perhaps aesthetically it is not the best, but it is a functional choice. Not surprisingly, in addition to the two double cabins, there is a spacious saloon (with a height of 1.85 m), galley, bathroom, and broadside seating below. Weighing in at 3,100 kilograms for a total sail area of 37.60 square meters, the boat is easy to steer and has a good pitch, even in light winds.
The model under review, visible in Lavagna (Genoa), is 2004, one-owner, super-equipped with sail games and gennaker, powered with 20-horsepower Lombardini inboard. The boat is in excellent condition.
Alpa 11.50 – 11.56 m – The Sparkman & Stephens Jewel
We go up in square footage for the third of the used boats for sale. This is also a historic Classic Boat by Giornale della Vela, in fact it is an Alpa 11.50 (11.56 x 3.20 m).
For those who like the classic boat with sleek, clean lines, great leaps, and the prestige of the signature (Sparkman & Stephens), this is a tasty opportunity.
Relatively narrow beam, skeg, classic ’60s sloop rig at masthead. Hard to go to a more classic hull. The Alpa 11.50, put on the market in 1967, is a truly unremarkable hull, good boliniere and more marine than many current hulls. There is room on board for a forward cabin and a guard cabin, as well as bunks that can be made in the dinette by adapting sofas. The long spire also offers an advantage in terms of brightness, as well as ceiling height.
The boat for sale, visible at Marina di Pisa is from 1972 and has had only one owner since 1980. The aft and rigging are brand new, and the motorization is with 26-horsepower Faryman inboard.
Sun Odyssey 439 – 13.34 m – Briand’s comfortable cruiser
Let’s move on with the fourth of the used boats looking for an owner on our marketplace. It is the turn of a modern cruiser, a Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 439 (13.34 x 4.24 m).
The Sun Odyssey 439, a 2011 design, follows in the footsteps of the line launched with the Sun Odyssey 409.
A powerful line with a sketchy edge at the stern, contrasting tones with black openings, purity of the rounded deck line at the ends, this is a bold look from the pencil of designer Philippe Briand. Under sail, it proved to be a balanced model with good performance and, above all, ease of handling even with a small or inexperienced crew.
The boat, visible in Rosignano Solvay (Livorno), has been regularly maintained and is in excellent condition. It is ready to sail right away. The 54-horsepower engine was recently serviced, and the documents are in order. The sails are from 2019.
ICE 54 – 17.21 m – ICE’s bestseller
We close our review of used boats with a thoroughbred luxury performance cruiser. We saw him in action a few days ago at the VELA Cup in Chiavari and loved it. We are talking about an ICE 54 (17.21 x 4.65 m).
The boat, named “Grandma Lucia,” is brand new. The design of this bestseller of the Italian shipyard (20 boats sold!) was signed by Umberto Felci, a designer who has a long collaboration with the Cremonese shipyard, based on the previous 52-foot model.
ICE 54’s deck plan is rich and rationally organized. The three winches-two for the mainsail, one for the halyards-are accompanied by the electrically operated mainsail traveller, which can be operated directly from the helmsman’s station. The deck remains very clean because all rigging is concealed except for the jib sheet.
Compared to the Ice 52, the freeboard of this boat is 6 centimeters higher, the transom is a bit longer as is the dolphin house, which “gains” 50 centimeters compared to its younger sister. The hull laminate–vacuum infused with epoxy–on the boat is made of glass-carbon hybrid, which is very light and high performance. For this reason, the weight of the deck is all in all low, and is 730 kilograms in total.
As for the interior design, the goal of the designers who designed the Ice 54 was to make a more spacious second cabin with two separate beds. With this addition, the number of cabins aboard Ice 54 increases to three, with a total of six comfortable berths. In addition to the ensuite bathroom in the master cabin, the aft bathroom with separate shower stall is also enhanced on this boat, which manages to have significant dimensions, in fact it is a full 1.86 meters long.
The material chosen for the ICE 54’s wooden interior is bleached oak, which gives-along with the lacquered surfaces-a minimal, elegant look to the vessel. The kitchen is equipped with all the amenities, from the oven to the maxi refrigerator (similar to the ones we have at home, mind you) to the dishwasher, with an island countertop that allows the cook to have plenty of space to use. Standard air conditioning system, also powered by a lithium battery pack with a 3-kw inverter, which avoids the installation of a generator.
