DolceVela 48 Vintage - 2
DolceVela 48 Vintage – The “laboratory” boat full of new solutions from AV Yachting

Vedging the renderings and photos of the new DolceVela 48 Vintage (14.85 x 4.40 m), raise your hand if you did not immediately think of Ernesto Tross (1932-2020), the staunchest proponent of the mainsailless boat theory (you may remember his Grey Bear and White Bear). But beware, the absence of a mainsail is just one of the new features that the boat-designed for an experienced owner by AV Yachting (new brand but experience to spare: A and V stand for Alessandro Vismara)-carries.

DolceVela 48 Vintage, a new “use model”

As Alessandro Vismara tells us “it is not simply a boat with a new sail plan, a new layout, a new propulsion and a new style–it is a new concept of sailing, a new way of going to sea. It is not just a boat tailored to an owner, it is a use model. is the combination of the 40 years of experience put in by AV, a young design with a scientific approach, and an experienced owner who is prepared for innovations.” The idea behind DolceVela is to sail as much as possible. Because without the mainsail, you don’t struggle, and you can go out and have fun even on your own“.

What’s new

Let’s summarize what’s new at Dolcevela:

The sail plan: without mainsail, the genoa (100 sq. m.) and foresail (50 sq. m.) are furling and stackable. Each sail is inferred on a textile anti-twist forestay (PBO). The furler is a Jiber with furlers connected to the anti-twist cable without the use of the classic aluminum profile. Current rigging in the cockpit is easily handled by 3-speed Antal electric winches.

Outboard motors are hidden, aft

The dual outboard motor installed below deck, aft. This system offers many advantages: including faster and quieter theory navigation, simplified management due to less maintenance, and ease of replacement. In addition, by eliminating the exhaust, cooling, and insulation systems typical of inboard engines, it was possible to simplify and lighten the boat, improving sailing performance.

The layout of the boat: the cockpit is at the same level as the dinette (which offers 360-degree visibility) and has a roof that shields you from the sun and rain. In the master cabin, bulkheads are replaced by structural ribs that disappear into the dunnage to create an open space and passageway all around the center bed. Guests have access to the day toilet and a comfortable cabin. And outside: the deck has no steps, no ropes and winches around–in fact, it’s a big living room on the sea.

DolceVela 48 Vintage, 50 Shades of Wood

This is not the end of the story. It is also good to say a few words about the construction. The innovative construction system based on the dictates of Industry 4.0 with 3D modeling and laser cutting is a sustainable approach that uses the most traditional material, wood, in a modern way. The hull is in red cedar strip planking, while the deck, bulkheads, and broadside are in CNC-cut okumé panels, the hull and deck structures in solid Douglas fir and iroko.

Joints and reinforcements are the only “artificial” part with structural bonding with epoxy matrix and composite (carbon fiber and glass + epoxy resin), but again with a “green” eye: “Epoxy resins are derived from biomass and reinforced with flax fibers“, reveals Vismara, which calls the boat a “platform” on which to build its needs. The boat is also available in 40-, 46- and 50-foot sizes. We will keep you updated as soon as we are able to get on board for a test!
