Ambrose Beccaria
Ambrose Beccaria

Delicate phase of Transat CIC for Class 40s., which are located about 500 miles from the arrival of New York City. Ambrogio Beccaria on Allagrande Pirelli had placed a blow that seemed decisive in the last depression, gaining in less than 48 hours 80 miles on direct rival Ian Lipinski, and taking the lead in the race. All to go again for Bogi, because in crossing a windless ridge Lipinski made up all his ground and, after also taking the lead, is now a handful of miles behind the Italian.

Complicating matters for Italy’s Class 40 was the contrary Gulf Stream, which Beccaria encountered as he pushed further south than his direct opponent. The trajectory of the presence of the current in that area is difficult to calculate, and sometimes it only takes a few miles further south or further north to make a difference.

Transat CIC – Chess Match

Beccarie and Lipinski’s location, and the northern limit of the route.

Allagrande Pirelli and Credit Mutuel will soon go to the crossroads: Lipinski will have to tack so as not to cross the virtual northern limit of the course, beyond which boats cannot go due to the presence of a cetacean pass area, and at the crossroads it will become clear who is really in front.

There is another windless zone on the horizon, however, and a feeling that this Transat CIC will still hold many surprises. Good news for Alberto Bona on IBSA, in fifth, who may have a chance to shorten on the leading group. The Turin native is currently 140 miles behind Beccaria, and just over 60 behind Nicolas d’Estais and Fabien Delahaye.

Unlucky regatta instead for Giancarlo Pedote and Prysmian among the Imoca 60s, with the Tuscan experiencing numerous technical problems during the race. First it was the onboard electronics that malfunctioned, then due to an as-yet unspecified problem with the boat’s steering systems (as the sailor’s official press note n.d.r. states) he was forced to slow down and proceed toward New York at reduced speed, with the goal of getting the boat to the finish line.
