With the first Atlantic depressions the
Transat CIC, formerly Ostar
, gets into full swing, with the Imoca 60 and Class 40 fleets sailing westward against the weather systems affecting the North Atlantic at this time. New York is still a long way off, but in the meantime the early balance in the rankings is emerging.
In Imoca 60 it is the “usual” Charlie Dalin with his new Macif who leads the dance, marked closely by Yoann Richomme who seems to have settled in immediately on Imoca 60s and with his Arkea Paprec. Giancarlo Pedote with Prysmian is in 18th position, currently 142 miles behind the leader. Not easy for Pedote to hang on to the top 10, where there are so many newer boats than his Prysmian, which is a first-generation foiler raggiornato in foils and bow, but does not have the same performance as the newer Imoca boats.
How are Ambrogio Beccaria on Allagrande Pirelli and Alberto Bona on IBSA in the Class 40s doing instead?
Transat CIC – How the Italians are doing in the Class 40s
The level of Class 40s also in this Transat is confirmed to be very high, and this time ours did not start immediately in the lead as happened in other surrounding. In tackling the first depression of the race, encountered at the height of Ireland, Beccaria and Bona stayed slightly south of the outriders and now find themselves in fourth and fifth position. Beccaria accuses only 12 miles from leader Fabien Delahaye, for bona the miles to recover are currently 37.
However, since they are both in the leading group soon an opportunity will arise to try to attack. Not today, where it will continue a one-edge starboard tack in 20- to 35-knot winds, but on tomorrow evening a ridge will bar the way for the fleet, and then there will be a chance to shorten on the leaders and go to catch up with the boats that are slightly farther north at the moment and lead the leaderboard. However, the accumulated delay remains fully remediable, especially since Allagrande Pirelli and IBSA have always demonstrated strong performances, sometimes even outperforming their opponents.
In short, the Transat CIC is still only in its early stages and within 24-36 hours, especially for the Class 40s, reshuffles in the rankings can be expected.
