4 used boats from 7 to 13 m + one “bonus” dinghy
Classic Boat certainly means that they are hulls more than 25 years old in design, but that does not mean they all have the same year of launching; on the contrary, these are very different from each other: so here are 5 classics from 1974 to 2000. A safe used boat: guaranteed by the Sailing Newspaper!
J/24 – A great cult among one-designers (1984; 7.3 m)
Opening this review is a timeless classic that needs little introduction. It is a J/24, Johnstone’s evergreen, cult 1977 design.
More than a boat, in fact, the J/24 is a piece of history, a myth. With 5400 launched (more than half of which are still sailing), this small 7.3-meter is a spectacular monotype and the most widely used in the world. Fun, technical but not too technical and, most importantly, widespread, you can race there anywhere, anytime. The circuits are many, the prices low and the satisfactions assured. It is an investment that will always pay off, because although the project ages, J/24 will always be relevant. The 1984 model for sale is in excellent condition, has always been kept on land and can be seen in La Spezia, Liguria.

Swan 371 – A “swan” by Ron Holland (1980; 11.28 m)
In the late 1970s, in the transition between Sparkman & Stephens and Frers, Nautor Swan had a brief collaborative period with New Zealander Ron Holland. In 1979, one of the first projects of this pair, the Swan 371 was born. This is a special hull for connoisseurs. The lines are clean, the aesthetic canon is Swan, and the details are all at Holland. It was a small success, 87 hulls in just under 10 years. Below deck we find aft and side cabins and a V-shaped forward cabin, not to mention a dinette that can be converted into a berth.
The proposed 1980 hull has been well maintained over the years, the deck teak is in good condition, and several sail games, new and used, are offered. The whole is visible in Alghero.

Sortilege – When the signature was Dufour (1974; 12.5 m)
Michel Dufour was a trailblazer and a genius. In large part, perhaps being a little wide of the mark, it is to him that today’s boating owes its origins. After signing such masterpieces as the Arpege, in 1971 Dufour launched the Sortilege, a boat that is peculiar in appearance, but solid and marine like few others. It was the Ketch brother of the Dufour 41, a boat capable of going anywhere and appreciated by true bluewater enthusiasts. In ’71 she was the yard’s flagship; today she is a great option for smooth sailing on a 1970s classic.
The 1974 Sortilege offered here is equipped with a 53-hp Perkins engine, has a 2-cabin, 2-bathroom layout and is complete with electric windlass, full electronics and 12 sails. It is visible in La Spezia.
HERE you will find the full announcement.
J/130 – The Cruising ULDB (1993; 13 m)
And 1992 and Johnstone performs one of his usual miracles. In this case, it is the J/130, the hybrid between a comfortable cruiser and a racing ULDB (Ultra-Light-Displacement-Boat). The result is a hull that is depopulated in the U.S., a boat that is fast and agile but simultaneously comfortable and manageable even short-handed.
The J/130 for sale, launched in 1993, can be seen in La Spezia, installs a 40-horsepower Yanmar engine, has folding blade propeller and electric windlass. On hand are mainsail, light genoa, heavy genoa, jib, mainsail, spinnaker, gennakerl, and awning.

Flying Dutchman – A gift drift, for those seeking a “project” (1968; 7 m)
The Flying Dutchman was a small masterpiece, an incredible drift, highly appreciated. Designed at the turn of 1951 and 1952, it is considered one of the most elegant and fastest dinghies of its time, later supplanted by hulls of the caliber of the 420 and 470. Nonetheless, it is a technical, agile and fast project that is extremely pleasant and capable of providing quite a few joys. Complete with mainsail, jib, spinnaker and trapeze, it is ideal for anyone who wants to have fun, kids or adults that is.
In the case of the Flying Dutchman in question, it is a gift. A special gift, because this hull is from 1968, is made of wood, and definitely requires loving and no small amount of restoration. But, because there is a but, it is a golden opportunity for enthusiasts and all those who are not afraid to get their hands dirty. Not to mention, saving a boat is always a good thing.
