UNVEILED – America’s Cup 2024
The “showdown” has begun: defender Team New Zealand is the first to sail with the new AC 75, Luna Rossa amazes everyone with a boat in the utmost pursuit of aerodynamics, and Alinghi, like its sponsor RedBull, “puts on wings.” The new hulls have evolved from the previous generation and are expected to perform 3% better than last Cup.
THE INVENTOR – Gianni Cariboni
As a child he took tourists out as a paddler as long as he was on a boat. Today he is considered the world’s foremost expert on hydraulics and hydraulics applied to sailing. There is no America’s Cup or super custom boat that does not mount a Cariboni system. He invented the canting keel, devised cylinders that are works of art, thought up cutting-edge rigging when he was dealing with masts. At 75, Gianni Cariboni has not stopped looking ahead, searching for the next innovation. The winner of the Sailor of the Year “Epic” award speaks.
Vote for your sailor! – Sailor of the Year 2024
For the 33rd time since 1991, the Sailor of the Year, the most prestigious award in Italian sailing organized by the Giornale della Vela, returns. It’s really you, with your online votes starting April 30 at velistadellanno.giornaledellavela.com that decides who gets into the final round, making the shortlist of the top five candidates in each category. Among them, the GdV Jury elects the Sailor of the Year 2024 and all the winners of the other categories, an all-around expression of the fantastic world of sailing. Find out who the top 50 in Italian sailing are and run to vote for your favorite candidate. Then you turn pages and discover two big news items.
NAUTICAL TOURISM – The Italian Treasure.
“Exploiting” the beauty that nature and man’s artistic abilities throughout the centuries have bequeathed to us is not only not wrong but in fact could be the recipe for giving Italy a better future. Are we going too far? Follow us on this journey to discover how nautical tourism could become Italy’s “oil.”
A SUMMER IN A BOAT – With my own boat or by charter? Where to go – what to avoid – where to eat – what to see
Do you know what one of the few best things about a sailing vacation is?
Dreaming of and planning a boating vacation as the days begin to lengthen and summer begins to seem closer
But proceeding slowly, I have tried to put down a psychological profile of the sailor-nautical cruiser, between phenomenology and psychological profiling, dividing the types into four groups. I will tell you right away that the truly favored group is number two….
The categories identify those who this year:
1. They will go on a cruise in their own boat.
2. They will go on a cruise in other people’s boat.
3. If they rent it out.
4. They think about it every year but then end up in the vacation village with the family or, even worse, on cruise ships.
POLO AND T-SHIRT – Sun I do not fear you
The polo shirts and t-shirts to stay cool and protected on the boat. Cith the imminent arrival of summer, long days of sunshine at sea are finally waiting for us. It’s already time to enjoy your free time on your sailboat, perhaps enjoying a nice aperitif at the dock take advantage of the early warm weather for a sail out or a chat in the harbor.
Special Ports – In search of the perfect port
With a total of more than 112 thousand berths, Italy is confirmed as a top destination for European and world nautical tourism. But if we move from quantity to the quality of the offer of “hospitality” on the sea, we find that there are only 88 tourist marinas equipped exclusively for recreation. The challenge is to increase and improve more and more ports to generate economic growth for the whole industry.
MYTHIC BOATS.
Moretto – Gardini’s pocket-sized Moor of Venice
You don’t need to have spent years at Bertone’s, Pininfarina’s or Giugiaro’s to understand that designing a “fuoriserie” or a big, big car assures you of many chances of success, but on the contrary, when you find yourself sketching a small project, then things become difficult, impervious! Easy in some ways to draw a nice MaxiBoat of 20 and more meters, much much more difficult to draw a “little boat” of 8-9 meters, to say… But if you are a naval genius like German Frers the thing is not only not impossible but achievable, in fact, it is achievable and it is called The Moretto!
Brava – I’m back!
Thanks to the passion of a Dutch shipowner Brava, the 1980s Italian IOR Icon Vallicelli’s masterpiece returns to sail in all its glory. After 40 years, it is the return of a myth. The whole story of his rebirth.
Cheyenne – Rodman 42 JV – A Love Story.
A passion for sailing and going to sea has given a second life to a 2003 Judel/Vrolijk 42. Glorious boat on race courses, now purest cruiser racer.
BOATS OF THE MONTH
Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 350 – Small (but big) boat makes good stock
It is the entry-level of Jeanneau’s cruising range, a vessel with surprising interior volumes. The walkarounds are “walkaround,” without steps, and it has a backstay-less limb. Good performance, even in breezes. Our test.
DolceVela 48 Vintage – The boat without a mainsail and “twin engine”
Meet DolceVela 48 Vintage, the concentrate of out-of-the-box solutions that the new AV Yachting brand has created for an experienced and visionary owner.
Eryd 40 xsm – The fast little superyacht
The Eryd 40 xsm is designed for IRC and ORC racing, but it can be configured in various versions, with a look that does not go unnoticed.
Hanse 590 – The flagship without compromise
Keywords space and ease of handling, that’s what the German Group’s new 17-meter will look like.
IN PRACTICE – Strong winds ZERO STRESS.
Everything you need to know to sail smoothly, even if the “wind” comes. Whether you are in the middle of the sea or in port.
