At the RAN 630, The first boat to round the buoy set near the Faraglioni of Capri on the morning of April 26 was Lunatika, Sunfast 3600 skippered in doubles by skipper Guido Baroni together with Alessandro Miglietti, already overall winners of the 2023 edition of the Naval Academy Regatta.
This seventh edition is characterized by Lunatika’s alternating lead with Alessio Bernabò’s Class40 Vaquita, which had taken the lead at the Porto Cervo gate, while at the Faraglioni di Capri it turned in a mere 6 minutes behind.
The leading pair of boats stretched further ahead of the rest of the fleet over the course of the Tyrrhenian Sea crossing to Capri, managing to latch on to a southerly flow of air, later rotated from the southeast, while the chasing group remained entangled in wide areas of becalmed conditions.
Lunatika turned the Capri buoy on April 26 at 10:52 a.m. in a wind of about 7 knots followed by Vaquita at 10:58 a.m. It was then necessary to wait until 10:24 p.m. for the third yacht to transit, Luca Bettiati’s Figaro 3 Muttley BDM Audit followed by Amapola II at 11:09 p.m. Subsequent passages all occurred during April 27: Audace at 3:01 a.m., Pegasus at 7:56 a.m., the two Navy boats Antares at 8:11 a.m. and Gemini at 8:30 a.m., Adrigole at 8:57 a.m., Blues at 10:30 a.m., Ojalà II at 12:24 p.m., and Tattoo at 4:15 p.m. At the moment only Little Shark has not yet transited while Kokopelli has reported withdrawal due to a technical problem.
The fleet is sailing in light air to Livorno where the leading duo is expected between late afternoon and evening tomorrow, April 29. However, a becalmed bubble, which may go to form just before Livorno, makes the estimated time of arrival very approximate.
Yacht Club Capri sports director Costanzo Vuotto said, “The Yacht Club Capri is pleased to offer its contribution to the RAN 630 by placing the buoy in front of celebrated Faraglioni. We will be in Livorno on May 1 to personally present Lunatika with the Terra delle Sirene Trophy.”
The Terra delle Sirene Trophy is produced by “Tin Adventure” an inclusion project active in training and job placement for political refugees, asylum seekers and people at risk and is offered by the Capri Green company.
The RAN 630 is part of the Accademia Navale – Città di Livorno International Sailing Week and organized by the Livorno Yacht Club in collaboration with the Naval Academy and the Livorno MM Sailing Section “Riccardo Gorla,” is held under the auspices of FIV and UVAI and is a valid race for the Italian Offshore Championship with coefficient 3.
Since the first edition in 2018, the RAN 630 has adhered to the ethical principles for the protection of the sea promoted by One Ocean Foundation’s Charta Smeralda, the regatta’s Sustainability partner. In the last edition, competitors were offered the initiative of the Onboard Ecological Officer (RECO), a new crew figure responsible for good practices in sustainability and protection of the sea, which this year became an integral part of the FIV Regulations for offshore racing.
Officine Gullo, Italian excellence in the production of high-end kitchens, is also the main sponsor for the 2024 edition of the RAN 630. Official Timekeeper is Elba-based watchmaker Locman, which will offer some of its timepieces to the winners.
