After Alberto Riva and Acrobatica’s second-place finish at the Niji 40, Italian sailing is back on the attack in the Ocean, this time with one of the most complex transatlantics there is, the Transat CIC, formerly Ostar. At the start, at 1:30 p.m. today, there will be a total of 48 entries among Imoca 60, Class 40 and Vintage, with Alberto Bona and Ambrogio Beccaria among the 40 and Giancarlo Pedote in Imoca.
We told you in a beautiful evening of sailing the history of this regatta and what its difficulties are: on the Lorient-New York course we sail against North Atlantic depressions, which means that most of the course is very likely to be upwind, a very tough gait for skippers, who will be tested in their physical endurance.
In fact, modern ocean openers have exciting performance but when sailing upwind, because of the flat, pulled hull shapes with show bows, they have extreme “slamming” in the waves. It is no coincidence that recently in Class 40 there have been some injuries, precisely because of the impact on the waves that these boats impose on those who lead them.
Transat CIC – The Expectations of the Italians
Needless to hide, expectations for this regatta are quite high. In the Class 40s Ambrogio Beccariaon Allagrande Pirelli comes in after winning the Transat Jacques Vabre and is the No. 1 favorite for overall victory. Not far from this prediction is also Alberto Bona on IBSA, winner of the 2023 season of the class where he was one of the most consistent, on the horizon is the scenario of a possible all-Italian “derby.”
After several months of work in the pipeline to complete improvements to his Prysmian, Giancarlo Pedote comes to the starting line of the Imoca 60 with good feelings. During the eve “parade” Prysmian performed very well, achieving one of the best times in the fleet.
Will this be enough to stay in the top 10? Hard to say, much will also depend on the weather conditions along the course and so many variables, not to mention that the level in the Imoca 60s, which are in the year of the Vendée Globe, is very high. In fact, at the start will be all the skippers taking part in the round-the-world race in November, for a race that will also be all to follow to understand Prismian’s real potential.
