5 used boats from 8.9 to 13.8 m
Classic Boat certainly means that they are hulls more than 25 years old in design, but that does not mean they all have the same year of launching; on the contrary, these are very different from each other: so here are 5 classics from 1974 to 2000. A safe used boat: guaranteed by the Sailing Newspaper!
Show 29 – A Little Big Masterpiece (8.9 m)
The first boat we see in this article is a great little Italian-style classic, a Show 29. Designed by the legendary Alain Jèzèquel in 1973, it is one of the masterpieces of the Barberis shipyard, which brought to market a hull with immediate success. It was very fast, it was spacious, and it had volumes that were definitely unexpected for a 9-meter.
The Show 29 for sale is a model made toward the end of the series, in 1986, is registered with a length of 8.93 meters, is 3.10 meters wide at maximum beam and fishes 1.7 meters. In terms of interior layout, there are two V-shaped berths in the bow, there is the ever-present single guard berth in the stern, and in the dinette, additional sleeping berths can be obtained from the sofas. Of course, there is no shortage of toilets and kitchen. The engine consists of a 2012 30-horsepower Lombardini-Kohler LDW 1003.
The model under review can be seen in Argostoli/Kefalonia.
Alpa 11.50 -A Sparkman & Stephens Signature Classic (11.5 m)
Covering second place in terms of length was a small Italian miracle: an Alpa 11.50. For those who like the classic boat with sleek, clean lines, great leaps, and the prestige of the signature (Sparkman & Stephens), this is a tasty opportunity.
Relatively narrow beam, skeg, classic ’60s sloop rig at masthead. Hard to go to a more classic hull. The Alpa 11.50, put on the market in 1967, is a truly unremarkable hull, good boliniere and more marine than many current hulls. There is room on board for a forward cabin and a guard cabin, as well as bunks that can be made in the dinette by adapting sofas. The long spire also offers an advantage in terms of brightness, as well as ceiling height.
The model under review, visible in Lipari, is from 1974 and is powered by a 30-horsepower Faryman inboard engine. Complete with electronics and sail games, it has a mahogany interior.
Genesis 43 – Vallicelli’s signature cruising masterpiece (13m)
Third hull in review, another homegrown classic, a Genesis 43. Before Vallicelli came to Comar and designed it, no one had dared so much. The Genesis 43 is, in fact, a boat born to break the mold and has a design that is absolutely unprecedented for its time. It was a boat out of the chorus, full of ingenious solutions with the hand of archistar Vallicelli. A piece of history, in short.
In the case of this hull, launched in 1997, it is a model made toward the end of the series, and thus refined from the first examples, which were launched starting in 1990. The shipboard layout includes 2 double cabins in the stern and one double cabin in the bow. In the square, however, there is room for both the living room, with an oval-shaped sofa and table, and the kitchen.
The hull in question can be seen at Marina Sant’Andrea, San Giorgio di Nogaro (UD).
X-442 – Niels Jeppesen’s thoroughbred cruiser-racer (13.5m)
Almost concluding this list is a thoroughbred cruiser-racer: the X-442. In production since 1993, the 442 (13.50 x 4.20 m) is a successful design by Niels Jeppesen (it underwent a slight restyling with the MKII version starting in 1999). In total, more than 100 examples have come out of the Danish shipyard. The construction is sandwich fiberglass integrated with a steel structure. The result is a boat with exceptional rigidity. A very fast boat, great for long cruises.
Sailing performance is at the highest level, especially upwind. The deck is functional with a large cockpit where a rudder wheel as large as 1.60 m in diameter towers. Inside, just down the ladder, there is a toilet on the left and the large chart on the right. A large square then opens up with a dinette on the left opposed to the kitchen. In the stern are two twin cabins and in the bow is a powder room with one or two cabins, depending on the version. Excellent finishes.
The model for sale, visible in Bari, is from 2000 (so MKII): it is in excellent condition.
MOANA 45 – A sloop to sail around the world (13.8 m)
Concluding the review is a hull designed for longer voyages, a true bluewater. After the Malingri’s ocean experiences, divided between the Whitbread Round the World Race on the CS&RB and the various Ostars, they are working on a hull that will adapt to the lessons learned, looking at long crossings. Moana was born, of which 45 is perhaps the most striking exponent. The rigging, for example, is all deliberately oversized, precisely so that we can face any condition with that extra bit of safety, which never hurts.
The hull in question, launched in 1982, was completely refitted in 2017, offers 3 separate cabins, 2 bathrooms, a 180-horsepower Ford engine, windvane steering, rigid spry-hood, solar panels and heating. In short, he would seem ready to take on any journey.
The model for sale, visible in La Spezia.
