At the VELA Cup Liguria comes the Classic Boats

We are still a few weeks away from the start of the VELA Cup Liguria, the first event of this great regatta season full of awards! Prominent among the many boats that have already registered are the Classic Boats, those boats, including standard and fiberglass boats, more than 25 years old, as Mirit By Lucio Ruocco, a 1985 Grand Soleil 39. designed by the legendary Alain Jezequel: a racing boat, designed to take full advantage of the IOR regulations of the time but which still sails beautifully today conveying the same emotions 40 years later. Also in the same length class is Blue Witch, Carlo Roso and Walter Zunino’s 1980 Baltic 39, while she is just smaller but still 1980 Bambina, Paolo Ponsicchi’s Stag 32. Honorable mention instead for Bruno L. Cova’s Mä Vista, the last boat that Cesare Sangermani, Cesarino’s father who died in 1976, designed and built for himself, a true Stradivarius of rare beauty.

Bruno L. Cova's Mä Vista is a 1972 Sangermani, the last boat that Cesare Sangermani designed and built for himself.

Cruising or Sport? The important thing is to all have fun together

The VELA Cup, you know by now, is a regatta for everyone. You don’t need a set of racing sails to participate, just a mainsail and jib to enter in the Cruising Boat category. Here then are such vessels as YOSHI, the Sun Odyssey 43 by Emanuele Fiore, Kiti Munina by Andrea Righini, a Rustler 36, legendary English boat, built of modern fiberglass, but with classic style and shapes, with a long keel, ScappoVia by Nicola Bosisio, a Beneteau Oceanis 37, e Massimiliano Poli’s EFRAM, a Dufour 412 GL.

For those who are more sporty, however, and want to use spi, gennaker and 0-tails, there is then the Sport Boat category. These include. Cheyenne, Luca and Tommaso Oriani’s Rodman 42 jv, just refitted for the cruising and racing season, Anna, Massimo Franchini’s Beneteau Oceanis 46, Pomella J, the J/92s of Nicola Vivanet, a regular at the VELA Cup in Tigullio, Grace, the Tofinou 12 by Alessandro Agosta, a fast and modern boat but of classic design, a gorgeous daysailer hand-finished in every detail, ALEBI, the Advanced 44 by Massimo Arrighi, Strolaga II, the Azuree 33 by Alessandro Savasta Fiore, e Bellatrix, the Italia Yachts 11.98 by Daniela Allodi Fiorentini.

Do you have ICE Yachts? VELA Cup Liguria counts as ICE Cup!

This year’s Chiavari leg is joined by the ICE Cup, reserved for the beautiful boats of the ICE Yachts shipyard. Magnificent, fast and modern boats from all over the Mediterranean will race side by side on the same starting line of the VELA Cup Liguria. A dedicated ranking for ICE yard boats and a “top secret” rating system will allow boats of different sizes to be compared.

Already many boats have registered for this leg. Among them are Pura Follia and Joy, two ICE 60s; Venilia, an ICE 60GC; No Regret and Nonno Veloce, two ICE 52s; Goose, an ICE 52RS; Soleag, an ICE 53ST; Nonna Lucia, an ICE 54; and Nice, an ICE 80.

The April 27 event will be only the first leg of the ICE Cup 2024, which then continues in Portofino on Saturday, May 4 and Sunday, May 5, at the Spring Regattas organized by the Yacht Club Italiano.
