The “show down” has begun, and the first America’s Cup 2024 syndicate to lay its cards on the table was Alinghi Red Bull Racing (our video at the base), which unveiled its new AC 75 to the public in Port Vell, Barcelona. The coordinator of the Design Team is Marcelino Botin, and from the first images of the new boat come a lot of confirmation to what we had imagined in our recent report on the design of the AC 75.

Alingji Red Bull Racing – The flat fairing to recreate the air cushion

At left is Te Rehutai, Team New Zealand’s winning boat at the last America’s Cup. At right are two possible design solutions to recreate the air cushion between the hull and water surface. Alinghi’s seems to be the solution in green.

The starting point for Alinghi’s new AC 75, and probably not just the Swiss, seems to have been Te Rehutai, but predictably there have been several evolutions in the Swiss team’s choices. The first concerns the shapes of the hull.

‘ Te Rehutai”
There were two ways, in our opinion, to recreate the much-desired air cushion between the water and the hull, an element that serves to increase the boat’s lift, create acceleration, and reduce the size of the submerged foils.

Notice how in the near-center area of the hull, at the foil arm, the surface of the hull appears to be totally flat and not inverted U-shaped as in our guess in yellow in the drawing above.

Alinghi Red Bull Racing’s choice seems to have been distinctly the one we highlighted in green, namely flat fairing.

The air cushion under the fairing.

We had defined it as the most conservative choice, mainly because the yellow solution in our drawing would imply some downforce risks (top-to-bottom thrust), which is not so easy to balance with appendages.

Interesting is the “wave” formed by the deck line, more hollowed out in the area where the sails will work flush with the deck, raised where the crew is positioned.

A fairly expected solution in summary, moderately conservative, but still more evolved in some elements than the old Team New Zealand.

AC 75 Alinghi Red Bull Racing – The “keel”

The central “keel” for example in Alinghi Red Bull Racing is much more pronounced, and the reason may be related to the conditions in Barcelona. Indeed, it was seen in the last edition how boats with completely flat hulls, such as the first Ineos or American Magic, were quickly shelved.

The keel element serves as an anti drift when the boat touches the water, and aids in its ascent up the foils. In Barcelona, with a race course where waves will dominate in many conditions, having a more pronounced keel may be convenient.

Alinghi Red Bull Racing – A Skinny Bow

Another substantial difference we noticed on the front of the boat, in the bow area. The section seems very reminiscent of that of Te Rehutai, but it is m much leaner and finer. Thus, we can see the search for a profile that has the least amount of drag, at the cost of eliminating even the upper bow volumes that were well present in the Kiwis’ boat.

A small edge appears, which was probably made to offer some resistance in the case of boring diving, bow-tie, to try to make the bow rise out of the water faster.

AC 75 Alinghi – The Transparent Dome

You can see a bit ahead of the area where the crew will be positioned a kind of transparent dome, under which the sailors will probably work. It could be used to repair any instrument screens, perhaps for a flight controller station.

Little has been seen of the deck and the area where the crew will be located, except for one interesting but also all-too-predictable detail: a sort of transparent dome, which we imagine could serve for crew protection and especially to keep out any instrument screens, thus imagining that that could be the flight controller station.

No details, however, were shown about the carefully concealed foils. In general, the boat presentation was arranged so that it was shown but not too much, not from every angle, and at a distance not too close for photographers. Classic America’s Cup strategies in short, partly to throw smoke in the eyes of the opponents, partly to keep some details of the boat concealed for a few more days, which will become quite public knowledge as soon as the AC 75 starts sailing.

In any case, it is forbidden to make mistakes: with only one AC 75 available for this America’s Cup those who get the design wrong will be out of the game because they will have no chance to make up for it. April 13 will be the turn of the new Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli.
