More and more people would like to own a boat, but few have the financial ability to buy them and the time to use them, or at least to use them enough to amortize the operating costs. A boat abandoned in the harbor and used only for a few weeks a year is-often-more of a problem than a nice pastime or place to spend one’s vacation. Among the solutions that allow you to have a boat always ready to enjoy while spending (much) less than buying it the traditional way is
Smart Boat Owner from 43° Parallel
. Here’s how it works.
What is the Smart Boat Owner solution
With the
Smart Boat Owner
a boat is sold not to a single owner but to six different owners. It is a system that has already been tried-and-tested-and much appreciated-in several countries abroad, and is now coming to Italy as well. The six owners, who need not know each other, apply to purchase one of the six shares available for each boat, after which they commit to three different contracts:
- share purchase agreement
- Contract governing the relationship between shipowners
- Contract with those in charge of management, i.e. 43rd Parallel
For 4 weeks of the year, the boat is kept stationary to carry out maintenance, routine and extraordinary, at the boatyard. Instead, for 48 weeks the boat is divided among the owners who have purchased shares. The calculation comes easy: 48 weeks divided by 6 owners: the boat is available for 8 weeks to each owner equally (e.g., not to the same owner for the whole summer and to another for the whole winter). The contract lasts 6 years, but the shipowner can decide to sell his share and get out of the contract earlier.
The management of the boat is all done in a very smart way through an application that you download to your mobile device. From there one can manage the weeks booked, change the dates of one’s reservations (within certain limits), suggest maintenance work to be done on the boat, and manage the check-in and check-out of one’s reservation. The advantage of this system is that it ensures that you always have a boat that is tidy, clean, and above all, functional because-unlike chartering-the use is directly of the six owners, who own the boat.
