YYachts, the German megayacht shipyard, has just launched the first hull of its new Y8 model, a new mid-entry iteration of its 80-footer. The result of a collaboration with renowned Danish interior designer David Thulstrup, the yacht will have its world premiere at the Palma International Boat Show April 25-28 and will be available for sea trials just after the show.
New Y8, the latest version of the 80-footer according to YYachts
Exactly one month before the start of the Palma International Boat Show, YYachts launched the new Y8, the eighth hull in the series, which offers a completely different approach to yacht design than its predecessors. Its styling, influenced by a YYachts customer who had sailed for many years on a Y7, presents a unique interpretation to the deckhouse and cockpit. The interior reflects the owner’s preference for large spaces, boasting a salon larger than can be found on a 90-foot yacht.
This 80-foot yacht uses the same full-carbon hull as Y8 and offers new options such as a tender garage with a wider opening and a more minimalist design. With its well-protected cockpit, the new Y8 is a yacht for comfortable transatlantic passages but is equally suitable for owners eager to race. From a technical point of view, unlike other 80-foot hulls, this Y8 is without a backstay. This allowed it to be fitted, as on Y7, with a Square Top mainsail, which provides more power in light Mediterranean breezes.
The rigging includes a self-turning jib and a carbon mast. Following YYachts’ Keep it simple philosophy, all on-board maneuvering is facilitated by a hydraulic system and electric winches. Quoting Tijl Hetterschijt, General Manager of YYachts, “you need to be able to manage a yacht intuitively and without too much effort, so many details and processes need to be thought out and simplified in advance. The art lies in reducing a yacht to its essential components without compromising comfort.”
YYachts founder Michael Schmidt adds, “For me, this new Y8 is a very special design. After all, I founded the site with the first Y8. Meanwhile, there have been several orders. But boating is always evolving thanks to modern construction materials, different types of masts, influential designers, and the racing world. This is what inspires us at YYachts to continuously develop new products.”
The new Y8 will make its world debut at the Palma International Boat Show April 25-28.
