“Who is your favorite sailor, ever?“ This is the question that our social media manager, Claudia Moleman, asked us point-blank-and “off the cuff”-last time she stopped by the newsroom. Each of us responded instinctively, without much thought and, most importantly, without anyone having heard the others’ response first. Result: five people surveyed, five different names.
Here is the video, which you can find on our Instagram profile (by the way, follow us if you don’t yet!):
Our legendary sailors
GdV editor Luca Oriani “played easy”: he had no doubts in naming Eric Tabarly, “the god of waves,” as his favorite. Many will agree with him; one only has to read Tabarly’s story to understand its importance. Instead, Deputy Director Eugenio Ruocco looked to the past, pointing to James Cook. He, the son of poor farm laborers, changed world sailing history: we told you his story here.

Senior account Pierfrancesco Pugno has opted for a sailor: Ellen MacArthur, strong sailor and silver medalist in the 2000 solo round-the-world race, a woman of records in the ocean; our accessories expert (and MYW Boat Show manager) Federico Rossi has a legend and his name is Tino Straulino. How can you blame him? The man who sniffed the wind was probably the strongest Italian talent of the last century (by the way, on the issue on newsstands and in digital, the beautiful story of Straulino and Marina Bulgari)! The less romantic and more “sporty” choice? Luca Sordelli, our video & content editor, made it. Robert Scheidt: 2 golds, 2 silvers and an Olympic bronze and 12 world golds between Star and Laser. A crazy talent that of the Brazilian. Which he also passed on to his family.
Who is your favorite sailor?
Let us know, with a comment, which is your myth sailor. We already know that you will hold it against us that we did not mention Bernard Moitessier (but it must be said that only a small part of the editorial staff was interviewed!).

And speaking of favorite sailors: voting for the Sailor of the Year, the most prestigious award in Italian sailing, will begin on April 27. You, with your votes, will decide who will win. Stay tuned!
