He scuffles with his drift and is in danger of being fed to a crocodile. In the Everglades, Florida, this can happen to you as well. It happened to 68-year-old Rodrigo Constain, who aboard a sunfish capsized in the marina shortly after putting it in the water. As he was trying to raise his boat, a crocodile grabbed his leg and bit him. The crocodile is known to locals as Half Jaw, as it has a reduced jaw at the bottom.
Bitten by a crocodile while boating
The unusual crocodile bite occurred last Sunday afternoon at Flamingo Marina in Everglades National Park and left the man, who was visiting the park, with a laceration to a leg that required immediate medical attention.
The Everglades is one of the largest wetlands in the world and, according to the National Wildlife Foundation (America’s leading nonprofit wildlife conservation and advocacy organization), is the only place in the world where American crocodiles and alligators coexist. There are about 1.8 million alligators in Florida, but only 2,000 crocodiles. Crocodiles are a federally threatened species. They have narrower, triangular heads and often prefer coastal, brackish and salty waters, while alligators are darker, have wider snouts and are typically found in fresh water.
Park rangers and biologists were investigating the attack and monitoring the suspected crocodile. In the meantime, the victim’s family members have launched a fundraising campaign to support the large medical expenses that are due in a private health care system such as the American one.
