Orange light on in the Atlantic Ocean, the organizers of the Ocean Global Race, the vintage crewed round-the-world race, reported that they have received an “alert” from the Italian Swan 65 Translated 9. Marco Trombetti‘s crew, engaged in the third leg of the regatta, is heading these hours to the Malvinas Islands (Falckland) where they will try to repair two open cracks on the hull in the rudder area.
Translated 9 – The first stage without Vittorio Malingri
The boat is not declared in imminent danger and is able to sail despite two waterways, one defined as significant. No injuries on board or other critical issues. The cause of the failure was also not stated in the official statement produced by Translated. Collision with an undefined object can also be assumed from the type of damage, although fatigue due to the miles traveled and especially the Cape Horn storm cannot be ruled out.
As is well known Translated 9 had set off on this third leg without Vittorio Malingri after the sanction imposed by the organizers for the events surrounding the Auckland stopover that we recounted via. The new skipper in charge is Simon Curwen, with Nico Malingri and Pietro Luciani technical leaders of the crew. Translated 9’s racing on this third leg had been top notch, always trailing behind Marie Tabarly’s faster and longer Pen Duick VI. Translated 9 is leading the Ocean Globe Race, having won the first two legs in IRC and the second also in real time.
Pe regulation, should Translated require outside assistance for repair, it would be declared out of the rankings in this leg 3.
