Gitana Edmond de Rotschild

The goal of finishing the round-the-world race in 40 days, the not-so-secret focus of theArkea Ultim Challenge, the solo round-the-world race on Ultim maxi trimarans, seems to be becoming almost a mirage for leader Charles Caudrelier with his Edmond de Rotschild.

Goodbye 40 days?

In fact, the stopwatch is running relentlessly and already marks 32 days, the target is 8 days away but the miles to cover before reaching the finish line in Brest for Caudrelier are still 6.300. Counting in hand, Caudrelier would not even need 700 constant miles per day to set a new all-time record.

More within reach is the 42-day benchmark, a solo record set by François Gabart in 2017. What slowed Caudrelier down most were the last 24 hours, during which he had to cross a transition zone between the South Atlantic depressions and the southeast trade wind just to the north.

Meanwhile, igniting the duel for second place are Thomas Coville and Armel Le Cleac’h, who are enlivening what is looking more and more like a match race around the world. Coville holds a 400-mile margin over his rival, but with the averages the Ultim are capable of, it is potentially less than a day’s gap. For the two of them, the miles to the finish line, with Cape Horn on the horizon in the next few days, are nearly 9,000. Lagging further behind are Anthony Marchand and Eric Peron.
