Five used boats from 9.14 to 12.80 m
Whichever model it is, good boat design and construction come out on top in this review. There are the signatures of Michel Dufour, Ed Dubois, Dick Carter Some are true enthusiasts, others will take you quietly (and comfortably) cruising. We present them in ascending order of length. A safe used car: guarantees the Sailing Newspaper!
Harpège – 9.14 m – Milestone of sailing for all
The first of the used boats for sale on our classifieds market is a mythical Classic Boat. Who doesn’t know theArpège (9.14 x 3.02 m), the first real large series fiberglass boat?
Thanks to an obscure mad engineer, Michel Dufour, who decides to design and then build his ideal boat. The first example in GRP was launched in 1967 and with him at the helm he won immediately. 1600 examples built from 1967 to 1978. There is nothing more to say.
The model for sale is dated 1974, but in good order and with sound hull. The boat is currently on dry land and can be seen in Cagliari. The price is negotiable.
New Optimist 38 – 11.42 m – In the Sign of Dick Carter
Let’s move on to the second of the used boats for sale on our classifieds market. Another great classic.
The New Optimist 38 (11.42 x 3.39 m) made for IOR third class was born from the pencil of Dick Carter as a cutter-rigged sloop after the experience gained with the Rabbit and Tina boats that won major regattas in the 1960s.
In 1967 and 1968 he won the One Ton Cup. Built in series initially by Cantieri Sail Boat of Bologna (future Cantiere del Pardo) in the early 1970s and later by Cantieri Navali of Fiumicino. Only a few specimens are currently present in Italy.
The model under review was completely refitted between 2021 and 2023.
Show 38 – 11.48 m – Classic from the 1980s
Designed by the Fontana/Maletto/Navone trio in 1980, a Show 38 (11.48 x 3.83 m) is the third of the used boats on this list, a great classic of 1980s Italian design, a Classic Boat par excellence.
In design terms, as a boat it was born out of the need to combine a sporty, high-performance hull, according to the IOR regulations of the time, with the features and amenities that make a boat suitable for family cruising. Fontana/Maletto/Navone perform the small miracle, creating a boat of moderate weight and length that is easy to handle and fun in most contexts.
The model we are telling you about was launched in 1983 and can be seen in Sicily, in Capo d’Orlando.

Dufour Sortilege – 12.50 m – A classic signed Dufour
We continue with the fourth of the boats used in the review. A historic Classic Boat, in the Dufour framework. We are talking about a Sortilege (12.50 x 3.75 m).
Solid and marine, full of the original solutions typical of the designs signed by the great Michel Dufour, the Sortilege was the Ketch brother of the Dufour 41, a boat capable of going anywhere and appreciated by lovers of true bluewater. In ’71 she was the yard’s flagship; today she is a great option for smooth sailing on a 1970s classic.
The boat for sale is located in La Spezia and is from 1974. Equipped with every comfort (two cabins, two bathrooms) and as many as 12 sails, she is ready to sail.
Wauquiez Centurion 42 – 12.80 m – DNA from Admiral’s Cup
We close with the last of the “vintage” used boats under the lens. A Wauquiez Centurion 42 (12.80 x 4.08 m).
Designed by the expert hand of Ed Dubois for the then-famous Admiral’s Cup, the design was then taken over by the renowned French shipyard Henri Wauquiez, which between 1985 and 1990 produced a curated and limited series of only 52 examples for a shipowning market.
The boat for sale is Utopia, number 45 (launched in 1990) and is the version with 3 double cabins, 2 bathrooms and limited draft, only 1.74 m. Equipped with every convenience, it has a 2017 engine.
