Italian sailing also has its Jannik SInner: Marco Gradoni, Ambrogio Beccaria, Ruggero Tita and Caterina Banti. We explain why

When a world-class champion emerges in a national sports movement, it often happens that this one acts as a driving force for the entire discipline, and thus increases the number of fans who follow, practice, or talk about it. The case of Jannik Sinner these days is emblematic, Italy returns to having a great tennis champion, perhaps as never before, and so many people become passionate about the sport again.

The three Sinners of Italian sailing

In the sailing world, where television coverage of events is unfortunately scarce, this process is more complex to trigger, but there is no doubt that today the Italian movement has its Sinner or rather, in our opinion, even more than one, perhaps three. Marco Gradoni can be the Sinner of the America’s Cup, Ruggero Tita and Caterina Banti those of the Olympic classes (and why not, also in the Cup), Ambrogio Beccaria for ocean sailing.

This is obviously paralellism for fun, but the underlying concept is how top-level sportsmen and women can be a stimulus and act as an inspiration to younger people or to bring new audiences together.

Marco Gradoni the golden boy of Italian sailing

Marco Gradoni aboard the AC 40 Luna Rossa.

Marco Gradoni at age 20 is one of Luna Rossa’s helmsmen, has won three Optimist World Championships and was awarded Rolex Sailor of the Year, the world’s highest honor. We are sure that around Italy there will be many young optimists or those who are getting into sailing on other dinghies, who dream of being able to go the same way as him. Just as was the case with Sinner, Marco Gradoni’s family has always been there for him and supported him in his sports, human and professional growth.

Ambrose Beccaria the cannibal

Ambrose Beccaria
is now in his thirties, but he, too, started very young and made himself from scratch starting with a semi-destroyed Mini 650. With talent, ideas, and also choosing the right challenges to devote himself to, he has already won a Mini Transat, a Jacques Vabre in Class 40 and second at a Route du Rhum, has crossed the Atlantic in regattas numerous times and is now at the helm of a project like Allagrande Pirelli, with an eye toward the future where we will see him on an Imoca 60.

Here again we are sure there will be many dreamers, perhaps with a little old Mini, who are being inspired by his path.

Tita-Banti the Relentless

Ruggero Tita and Caterina Banti

The Olympic dream is a road that sometimes seems impossible, yet
Ruggero Tita and Caterina Banti
made it to win that gold that had been missing for Italy for a very long time. They reinvented themselves after past experiences with different teammates and in different boats, and they had the ability to withstand the enormous pressure that perhaps only the Olympics in the sports world can give. Consistency, hard work, total dedication and discipline-this is what the two Olympic gold medals of the blue Nacra 17 are all about. What better source of inspiration?

In a society that sometimes seems to have lost its role models, sportsmen and their achievements can be one of the ultimate sources of inspiration. Long live the Sinners of sailing then.
