Yamaha Motor has acquired German electric motor manufacturer Torqeedo. The agreement with Deutz AG, owner of Torqeedo, will result in Yamaha acquiring all shares of the leading manufacturer of inboard, outboard, and electric pods for marine use, with more than 100,000 units produced since 2005.
Yamaha buys Torqeedo
With this transaction, Yamaha thus positions itself as a leader in the electric marine engine market. One of Torqeedo’s best-known models is the Travel, an outboard with a 1,100 W motor (equivalent to a 3 hp thermal) and a 1,080 Wh battery. Weighing 11.6 kg, the Torqeedo Travel Essential is ideal for dinghies, dinghies and sailboats up to 1.5 tons. For larger boats, there is also the Travel XP. Not to mention all the pod systems for larger boats that replace endothermic engines (e.g., the Cruise FP line).
Torqeedo, more than 100,000 electric motors produced since 2005
Torqeedo, recognizable by its orange motors, has been a pioneer in electric marine motor research and development for nearly 20 years, holding several patents and producing more than 100,000 electric motors, outboard and inboard, since 2005.
The acquisition will allow Yamaha to expand its offerings by combining traditional thermal engines with Torqeedo’s electric range, thus accelerating the transition to carbon neutrality in the marine industry.
This strategic step demonstrates Yamaha’s commitment to environmental sustainability, while also enabling the development of a new electric propulsion line. The union of Yamaha and Torqeedo will result in the creation of a line of mid-range electric outboards, filling a gap in the current market.
