The Arkea Ultim Challenge, the solo challenge between maxi trimarans around the globe, is transiting off the coast of Brazil, with the flying monsters that They grind an average of more than 600 miles in 24 hours. Fast yes, although so far the race has been slightly slower than expected, with a rather southerly positioned trade wind that has been less easy than expected to engage.
ARKEA ULTIM CHALLENGE – WHO TRIES THE ESCAPE
The news is that the six skippers racing at the Arkea Ultim Challenge are no longer as compact as they were in the early days of sailing. Charles Caudrelier with Edmond de Rotschild and Tom Laperche with SVR Lazartigue (discover our on-board tour) took a nearly 400-mile lead over Thomas Coville and Armel Le Cleac’h. More detached Anthony Marchand and Eric Peron.
The current phase is shaping up to be very fast for at least two reasons: the equatorial calms are far to the east of the area that the Ultimates are passing through, which are sailing swiftly at nearly 30 knots on average. The second reason that portends very high averages in the coming days is the trade wind, which is now strong and well-structured, offering ideal conditions for ultimates.
The descent along the Brazilian coast is expected to be very fast, and farther south depressions are already moving that skippers will be looking for. They will not immediately bend toward the Cape of Good Hope, but to head east they will wait for a weather system to the south to guarantee strong winds at the headwinds.
