There is a boat with an intriguing history (it was also owned by Renato Pozzetto) that is in danger. A 44-foot (13.41 x 4.32 m) IOR that has been lying in a state of semi-abandonment for years in the Lavazza shipyard marina in Brebbia, on Lake Maggiore. Her name is Wagner, she is a thoroughbred boat (a perfect Classic Boat, albeit not a standard one) and she is just waiting for a new owner to save her from demolition since the current owner has ordered her scrapped.
Wagner’s story, IOR of race
But here is the story of the boat.
Among the “stars” of the IOR period (International Offshore Rule), a regatta rulebook that knew how to involve great designers, great sailors, great boats and great creativity) there was Wagner, a twin copy of the more famous and more competitively set Vanina, designed by Scott Kaufman for the son of the then Confindustria president, Vanni Mandelli. The Vanina (survivor of the 1979 Fastnet, the one of the tragedy) was the gathering center for what would later become the crew of Azzurra 1983.
Wagner, built in 1979, was Vanina’s tame sistership, built by none other than the legendary Benetti shipyard, intended to sail with a Grand Touring demeanor and nothing more, a task she fulfilled magnificently. As happens to certain agé ladies, time brings a change of rider, and Wagner ends up in the capable hands of the Lavazza shipyard, inland waters but still of great quality, with associate Renato Pozzetto-yes, that’s him…
