An Italian boat will return to the World Tour in a major ocean race. He will do this with a flying monohull with foils, like the current America’s Cup boats. And it will be sponsored by a big world-famous Italian company, like Ferrari for instance.
An Italian superboat to break records around the world
This is the rumor that is persistently circulating among competitive sailing insiders.
That’s not all, top ocean sailing sailors will be involved, always authoritative dockside voices say, starting with Giovanni Soldini and continuing with Ambrogio Beccaria.
That’s not all, there are rumors that the shed where the boat will be built has already been identified. Some venture that it will be a 90-foot (27-meter) and will be capable of exceeding 50 knots of speed in a flying trim, stepping over ocean waves like a feather.
We do not know whether these persistent rumors are true, the possible interested parties obviously deny it.
Such a sensational project, which would put Italian ocean sailing back in the center of world attention after years and years of oblivion, must be top secret. He would be missed.
There are too many unknowns, hiccups that can jam up such a sensational and adventurous project.
One thing is certain. Italy has all the skills, abilities, and manpower to undertake a challenge that would bring our country back to the Olympus of world ocean sailing, the Tour of the World. Whether solo (chasing records) or crewed (who knows, we might set off to conquer the Jules Verne Trophy), it’s all the same. We hope that this is all true.
