The Ice Yachts shipyard, based in Salvirola, is one of Italy’s specialists in performance-cruiser style sailboats. The Ice’s special feature is that they are semi-custom boats, designed practically to the owner’s specifications. This is why theIce 53 ST, a Felci Yachts Design project, was born, a sporty evolution of the shipyard’s best-selling 52, which moved its first edges under sail after its launch.

ICE 53 ST – What a boat it is
The hull of the ICE 53 is an evolution of the 52, the most successful design to date for ICE Yachts. The great performance improvement work was done by enhancing the sail plan, which in the 53 ST version features a mainsail with a light square top and a longer bowsprit to increase gennaker size and the ability to sail at carrying gaits.
Compared to the “standard RS ” version, the ST has a weight reduction of more than two tons, with an approximate dry weight of 10 tons and an implemented sail plan for both upwind and to the carriers. The boat was requested by an owner who already owns an ICE 52 and decided to take it a step further, with a sporting turn that will also look to the racing world.
Construction
The hull is laminated with epoxy resin by infusion of quadriaxial and unidirectional carbon fibers with local reinforcements. A 3-step epoxy infusion technique will be used to laminate the hull skin, while the core will be a closed-cell, vacuum-bonded PVC. These choices, in addition to containing weights, give the boat a solidity and sturdiness capable of withstanding the repeated stresses and heavy loads faced in even the most demanding regattas.
ICE 53 ST – Interior
The interior layout is designed to be extremely versatile to easily switch from cruising to sporty and essential racing conformation. There will be two versions available. One more basic without the use of wood, one more finished but still with lightened panels.
The interior finish will be a mix of white painted and fairing surfaces and light finish composite panels. This provides significant weight savings compared to a traditional construction, without sacrificing the quality of joinery workmanship, both in the refinement of finishes and in the excellence of details.
