Can a boat that is used and at least 25 years old appreciate in value compared to the current listing? Yes, absolutely. But there are conditions for this to happen. Indeed, there are boats that are undoubtedly worth more than others, hulls that, over time, will be worth even more: these are the
Classic Boats by Giornale della Vela
, boats built in fiberglass and in series since 1967 and with a minimum of 25 years on their backs. These are boats selected on the basis of very specific canons, transcending the age of the artifact and focusing on its intrinsic historical value, from the overall design qualities and originality of the boat in its context. We have identified 188 of them (HERE) (with boat sheet, measurements, year of design, market quotations) but the list is constantly being updated. Among them, however, there are also some boats one step beyond, models that will have a greater appreciation than others. Exactly as in the world of classic cars, some models will become “Classic Boats Cult” in the future.
Here are a few, 7 Classic Boat Cult that, for the reasons we will explain, will not fail to increase in value.
Classic Boat Cult – 7 boats that will revalue more than others
Before we look at them, however, here are some key steps to increase the value of your Classic Boat, ad hoc solutions to dignify these great projects, increasing their value. Specially, in fact, we have created a network of professionals dedicated precisely to this enhancement.
- The first mandatory step in enhancing the value of a historic Classic Boat by Giornale della Vela is appraisal. We have identified two “top” appraisers(Davide Zerbinati and Danilo Fabbroni) who can draw up a real Classic Boat certification and see the historical value of the boat recognized. Only by careful analysis of the state of the property and its maintenance over the years, as well as checking that the original design has not been distorted, can its value be certified.
- Insurance is the second essential step, after the appraisal. Today it is difficult for an insurance company to value a boat that is at least 25 years old for its true value. With our initiative and a proper appraisal provided by our recognized broker(David Insurance), the intrinsic value of the asset is also recognized by the insurance company. And if the appraisal certified the boat’s excellent condition…the prize might even be
- Buying and selling is the third step that required dedicated professionals: we involved one of Italy’s leading brokers(Abayachting) capable of transposing the real value of each of the current 188 selected boats, both in the case of selling and buying. It helps you sell it or buy it at the best price by selecting the best buyer or buyer, performing an assessment of the boat’s condition.
- Our “dream team” of appraisers, insurers and brokers can be contacted with a click directly from the boat tabs.
SUPER MARAMU / SM2000
Amel; 16.00 m; 1989; H. Amel & J. Carteau
Inspired by the previous Maramu 46, already a success of the shipyard, the Super Maramu is a mythical hull among bluewater, almost a symbol, a French icon among boats conceived and designed to live aboard while touring the world. The design is most complete, presenting no concessions to passing fads, only rationality. In short, it is an evergreen. Armed with ketch, comfortable and marine, it has been incredibly successful: 400 examples produced, so much so that since ’99 there has also been an “updated” version, the Super Maramu 2000.

Classic Boat. SOLARIS ONE
SE.RI.GI; 14.79 m; 1984; Doug Peterson
She is a small masterpiece from the Aquileia shipyard, now Solaris Yachts. Built in about 20 examples, it was a “blue water” ante litteram, a hull of excellent quality, capable of going anywhere. Masterfully built by Se.Ri.Gi, this brilliant Peterson design is conjugated into a boat that concedes nothing to racing, with the archistar going freehand: the result is an original hull designed, really, for those who want to sail well.

ELAN 431
Elan Yachts; 12.98 m; 1989; J&J
Designed by the two Jacopin brothers (J&J) for Elan,it is one of the most beautiful boats of the late 1980s. It also has a notable strength, a trait that is a forerunner of future trends: it is among the first designs to clear the “stepped stern,” truly, miraculously succeeding in making it elegant. Also emblematic, in its own way, was the low, streamlined retractable deckhouse, a hybrid, if you will, between the classic S&S and early Vallicelli.

Classic Boat. HALLBERG RASSY 42 (F)
Hallberg Rassy; 13.22 m; 1990; Germán Frers
It is the Hallberg Rassy icon, the symbol of a concept. Here, for the first time, the shipyard’s great characteristic gifts, an evocation par excellence of comfort and safety, marry the signature beauty of Frers. What emerges is a lady globetrotter, the long-cruising boat by definition: easy, safe, takes you anywhere, anytime. It is already a cult.

BALTIC 42
Baltic Yachts; 12.78 m; 1981; Doug Peterson
This is the first time Doug Peterson has designed a boat for Baltic Yachts, a detail that already makes it a rare treat. The result, then, is excellent, raising the bar. The boat is beautiful, has a particularly streamlined line, and possesses great qualities in terms of performance. It is an excellent example of an IOR hull devoted to cruising. But still he runs.

X-512
X-Yachts; 15.57 m; 1990; Niels Jeppesen
It was X-Yachts’ first performance cruiser to break through the 50-foot barrier. It is an elegant and comfortable boat, cared for in every aspect to go along with the cruising life, but without sacrificing speed. Indeed, the profoundly sporting soul that X is strong in is not diminished, and it finds a not inconsiderable, rare balance in this project.

J/120
J-Boats; 12.09 m; 1990; Johnstone
Simple lines in the name of essentiality, ease of maneuvering (even with only two people on board) and powerful volumes. She is the embodiment and progenitor of J-Boats’ “cruising and racing together” philosophy. The freeboard is low, the deckhouse is low and the beam balanced as seldom. Simply put, he is the icon of the American way to sailing, a trendsetter of the early 1990s.
