J, P,E, HLP: the letters of the sail plan and what they represent

Have you ever heard of “length of the J” or “how long is the E,” and maybe you wondered what it was all about? J, E, I, are just some of the letters that indicate all measurements concerning the sail plan, and are used in ORC tonnage certificates.

At first glance this is a system that might seem difficult to understand, but it is actually quite simple. Let us then look at all the letters that may be on a tonnage certificate, and what they indicate regarding sail plan measurements.

Sail plan – all the letters to know it

Mainsail letters

P: length of the mainsail luff

E: length of the mainsail base

MQW = mainsail luff measurement at ¼

MHW = mainsail luff measurement at ½

MTW = mainsail luff measurement at ¾

MUW = mainsail luff measurement at 7/8

MHB = mainsail pen width

The bow letters

HLU: length of the luff of the jib

HLP: length of the perpendicular between the jib clew and the luff of the sail

J: distance between the front face of the mast base and the forestay attachment

HQW = luff-balance measurement of the jib at ¼

HHW = luff-balance measurement of the jib at ½

HTW = luff-balance measurement of the jib at ¾

MUW = inferitura-balance measurement of the jib at 7/8

HHB = width of the bow pen

The letters of the asymmetrical

SLU: luff length

SLE: leech length

SHW: width on the median

SFL: width at the base
