Francesca Clapcich
Francesca Clapcich will participate aboard American Magic in the Women America’s Cup

After the affaire Elodie Mettraux we raised the “case” of the Women America‘s Cup, Seemingly little attention from the official America’s Cup teams. and by the official communication of the Old Pitcher itself, pointing out how most of the crews, less than a year before the event, have not yet communicated how the women’s team will be composed. Only a few days have passed and here comes the announcement of American Magic, which has released the composition of the women’s team, and there is a big surprise for Italy: with the New York Yacht Club union there will be Francesca Clapcich, who became Italy’s most versatile sailor after Olympic campaigns and round-the-world (won) sailing.

Who is Francesca Clapcich

Born in Trieste in 1988, two Olympics and two round-the-world races behind him, lots of experience in offshore sailing (Was the first Italian woman to win a round-the-world sailing race), Francesca Clapcich is married to sailor Sally Barkow and has also lived in the U.S. for some time, from here the possibilityà to race with American Magic in the America’s Cup, where we recall a fairly strict nationality constraint was introduced to which the Women version is also tied.

Clapcich over the past few seasons has increased her all-around experience, supplementing her Olympic sailing know-how with offshore sailing skills, and now she is about to enter the foil world of the America’s Cup.

Women America’s Cup. What is there to know

As a reminder, the Women America’sCup will be racedwith AC 40s in Barcelona in 2024, with crews of 4 as in the case of the Youth version or as seen during the Vilanova and Jeddah Preliminary Regattas. The other female sailors hired by the star-studded team are. Sara Stone (30, comes from 49er and has experience on TP 52s and in the foil world), Steph Robe (34 years old, 49er), Erika Reineke (laserist with experience in the foil world, at Sail GP with Team USA), Anna Weis (25, comes from Nacra 17 and also took part in the Sail GP with Team USA), Helena Scutt (31, from Nacra 17).

They are all profiles of female sailors who are not emerging but already established and very well established in the world of professional sailing, most of them having already participated in major sports projects in their careers. This foreshadows a willingness on the part of American Magic to invest in the women’s project and aim high, namely to win the Women America’s Cup.

Francesca Clapcich chose the USA. Too bad!

Francesca Clapcich could also have been a viable element for Luna Rossa’s women’s crew, but on that front all is currently silent and the Italian union has made no official statement on the composition of the pink team. The Women issue, however, has now been put in the spotlight, and it seems likely that there will be news from the other teams in the coming weeks as well.
