The line design is classic and inspired by the famous J racing boats of the 1930s. The whole thing, however, is modernized through the use of contemporary materials and a revised keel shape to today’s standards; this mix has resulted in a beautiful day-sailer with a huge cockpit: the Eagle 44 (13.33 x 2.76 m) by Leonardo Yachts.

Based in the north of Holland, the shipyard’s mission is to build daily boats whose elegance is uncompromising, yet maintain the boat’s seafaring characteristics. Naval architecture firm Dykstra has created a very clean and simple deck design; the heart of the Eagle 44 is the large 8-person cockpit amidships: the rest is an expanse of teak from bow to stern, which are free of all tinsel in the J Class tradition.

The large mahogany and steel rudder wheel, together with the winches within easy reach, make it possible for one person to steer the boat without the help of other experienced sailors.A large mahogany table with sink and bar area, as well as four large lockers for stowing everything needed for navigation, are located in this area.

Interior

With the Eagle 44, however, you can expect to take on a sailing trip that lasts more than a day, because below deck there is space for a cabin with a V-shaped double bed. The ambiance is made elegant by the use of mahogany and an alcantara ceiling, which create a classic and luxurious atmosphere. There is also a built-in toilet, which is not visible when not in use.

Sail plan and construction

Let’s move on to the technique; the sails are signed by North Sails and the standard bulb is at a depth of 1.35 m: all this gives the boat good stability and at the same time makes it sufficiently “shallow” to enjoy inland waters as well. The construction is done with a lightweight foam core laminate, which, in combination with a modern keel and rudder blade configuration, makes the Eagle 44 fast and pleasant to use.

The mast is equipped with a system of internal trolleys, which help with mainsail hoisting and lowering maneuvers; the furling jib, on the other hand, is controlled directly by the helmsman. Fans of pure performance are catered for at Leonardo Yachts, as the Eagle 44 can also be equipped with a bulb lengthened to 2 meters and a taller carbon mast in combination with carbon/kevlar sails and a gennaker on the bow.

The Eagle 44 can be customized in many ways: the colors of the hull, deck, and caulking can be chosen to the owner’s taste, as can the fabric of the interior and exterior cushions.

Motorization is electric, with a system provided by Oceanvolt.
