Swedish company Seldén, which specializes in the development and production of deck equipment, is planning to launch interesting new products, winches and handles, at Mets in Amsterdam. We tell you about them while waiting for you to touch them at the most important exhibition dedicated to the world of nautical accessories, which will be held from November 14 to 17.

First up is the new range of self-tailing winches, planned in many different sizes, from 30 to 66 with diameters from 139 to 245 mm. In developing the new winches, Seldén’s engineers worked hard on the drum design, which features vertical ribs arranged in asymmetrical order with non-uniform spacing between them. In doing so, they achieved a product with excellent grip, partly due to optimized self-tailing. In fact, when the line is under load, the shaped ribs deform it, improving grip, while when it is loosened, the ribs do not all insist on the line at the same time, facilitating movement. In fact, the output of the sheet has also been improved, which can be very easily pulled out even with the handle inserted in the coupling. This technical expedient allows the sheet not to jump out and slip while remaining under control. These are the words in which Seldén marketing director Mats-Uno Fredrikson defined this technology, Asymmetric Rib Technology(ART).

“Our CNC operators did a fantastic job preparing all the different drum configurations that our designers came up with over the past six years. The final design has been at sea for two seasons, tested by both racing and cruising sailors, and we are excited to bring it to market. This is a return to the winch market for us and an addition to the E40i winch launched in 2019.”

The new self-tailing winches will be produced at the Seldén plant in Sweden, manual (S Series) 2-speed winches in sizes 30-40-46-52-60-66 and electric winches (E Series) in sizes 40-46-52-60-66. The latter are in all respects identical to manual winches but are equipped with a SEL-Bus motor assembly.

There are also the new winch handles

The new winch range will also benefit from the new handles that Seldén will also introduce after the presentation at Mets Amsterdam. These are two extremely durable anodized aluminum handles, available in 8″ and 10″ lengths and equipped with a low-friction knob with acetal ball bearings. The first is a traditional thumb grip handle, and the second is the Race Grip handle. The latter handle is designed to be quickly engaged and disengaged thanks to long release levers on either side of the handle, which are pushed inward when you grasp it. The rotation of the locking plate thus enables rapid engagement and disengagement.

  • Selden’s new products mentioned in this article – the winches and handles – will be distributed exclusively in Italy by Velamania starting in February 2024 – www.velamania.it
