Transat Jacques Vabre 2023| Class40: Beccaria dominates sprint over Lorient
Tough conditions from the start in Le Havre to the finish on Lorient for this first leg of the Jacques Vabre 2023, a particularly intense “Sprint Race” designed to gain miles before the arrival of the real front, an 80-knot, 10-meter wave monster that will hit Atlantic Europe from Wednesday. A masterpiece, then, the performance of Ambrogio Beccaria and Nicolas Andrieu on
Alla Grande Pirelli
, who won by dominating the fleet from start to finish, maintaining about a 10-mile lead for the entire duration of the race. A trial characterized by very strong seas and winds up to 40 knots. Crucial miles then, because they put the duo in an advantageous position for the next stage, the “long” one over Martinique, where the 1 hour 15 minutes and 29 seconds (1h15’29”) advantage gained at the finish line will count for no small amount.
Class40: the Sprint
An extremely challenging first test then, with still
7
boats in the finishing straight and as many as
5
retreats, including
Dékuple
, the Class40 with Co-Skipper Pietro Luciani, who impacted a UFO earlier in the day yesterday. Crédit Mutuel will also miss the roll call at the finish line, disalberated between Channel Islands at 0012 yesterday, withdrawing at 0800 on Cherbourg.
Eighth place, on the other hand, for Alberto Bona on his Class40 IBSA, second among the Italians, who arrived at the line with 1h 52′ 42″ from Beccaria, but just about thirty minutes behind the second, thus demonstrating an extremely compact leading group and a good overall pace. The other two Musa40s(Sangiorgio Marine), sistership of Alla Grande Pirelli find 11th place with
Influence2
by Andrea Fornaro, and 20th place with
Acrobatics
by Alberto Riva. Results that will count, but on much more compact times than the resounding ones signed by Beccaria’s Musa40, because they still arrived in the leading group, with reduced time lags compared to that recorded by the leader. Not to be underestimated, therefore, are any of the 4 Italian Class40 , all of them strong with good demonstrations of pace in these extremely difficult early days.
As of now, the rankings see the following Class40s in the top 10, while, the start on Martinique, as well as the course, are still far from being finalized, with race management waiting for the front to pass so that a new schedule can be finalized as best as possible. The IMOCAs remain in Le Havre, with the Ultim, however, already well past Cap Finisterre, heading south. Instead, all Ocean50s have arrived in Lorient, where they will await weather developments along with the Class40s.
Order of finish on Loriant:
1 – At Great Pirelli: 1 day, 10 hours, 5 minutes
2 – SNEF Group: +1h 15′ 29″
3 – Inter Invest: +1h 20′ 53″
4 – Legallais: + 1h 30′ 01″
5 – Amarris: +1h 33′ 05″
6 – Project Rescue Ocean: +1h 34′ 50″
7 – Everial: +1h 52′ 22″
8 – IBSA: +1h 52′ 46″
