18th Viareggio Historic Sails Rally: here’s how it went and who won

This 18th edition of the Raduno Vele Storiche Viareggio, the four-day event and regatta organized by the association of the same name and the Club Nautico Versilia over the past few days, Oct. 12-15, has also come to an end. Some sixty boats took part in the event, but there were also many side events, which saw, in parallel, the various boats parading in a parade, paired with vintage cars from the Scuderia Automobilistica Clemente Biondetti of Florence. There was also no shortage of in-water demonstrations such as themed exhibitions, not to mention, unique to this year, the celebration of 60 years of the historic Francesco Del Carlo Shipyard.
XVIII Viareggio Historic Sails Gathering: how it went and who won
Opening the dance, winning the Viareggio 2023 Historic Sails Trophy was Java, a 1938 Concordia Yawl, with Onfale (1962) winning the Sangermani Challenge Trophy instead. Going to the 100-year-old Barbara, however, were both the Elegance Award and the Tirrenia II Trophy. But let’s take a closer look at the rankings and their respective groupings.

Viareggio Historic Sails Gathering 2023 – Standings
As for the Viareggio 2023 Historical Sails, grouped in the rankings under nine distinct groupings, dominating the
VSV Class 0
, respectively, Rainbow (1), Matchless (2) and Gemini (3). Instead, it is Margaret (1), Chin Blu III (2) and Gazell (3) who share the podium in
VSV class 1
.

First place in
VSV class 2
for Java, followed by Vistona and Oenone. Suhaili, on the other hand, takes the top step in the
VSV Class 3
, followed by Hummingbird and Estella. La
VSV Class 4
saw Onfale triumph instead, followed by Ojalà II and Crivizza. Both the Charles Holland Trophy and first place in the
VSV Class 5
, here followed by Freya and Ella.

To win in
VSV Class 6
is Millenium Falcon, immediately trailed by Bizzosa and Gioconda. Relax wins instead in Class VSV 7, with Scylla in second place and Sula in third. Finally, to win the podium in
Class VSV 8
is Manuela V, followed by Rabicano and Grifone.

AIVE rankings with CIM certificate
The tenth leg of the CIM circuit regattas, this 18th edition of the Viareggio Historic Sails Gathering thus also sees 4 separate rankings relating to the AIVE classifications, below.
With 9 registered participants in Viareggio, the first place in the
AIVE Yachts Epoca ranking.
goes to Margaret, with Java earning second place and Vistona third. La
AIVE Classical Yachts ranking.
(with 13 entries in Viareggio), on the other hand, sees Onfale, Crivizza and Kerkyra II on the podium. Among the Classic IORs, again according to the AIVE rankings, Ojala II dominates over the 6 entries, followed by Nuvola and Gemini. The struggle between the
Classic Swan
finally settled with Matchless in first place, followed by Isabella and Josian.
Claw Trophy 2023
To complete the picture, this 18th rally was also representative of the last leg of the six Artiglio Trophy 2023 events, thus giving birth to the final season rankings. To win in category
Epoch
we find the first step of the podium occupied by Gazell, followed by Margaret and Barbara. In category
Classics
Crivizza dominates instead, followed by Penelope and Optimist, respectively. The category
Classic IOR
saw Ojala II triumph, followed by The Moor of Venice and Vanessa in third. The claw trophy was awarded to Gazell.

Tirrenia Trophy II
To conclude, the third edition of the Tirrenia Trophy II-which is awarded to the boat that has performed and documented the most interesting offshore sailing during the year-was won by the 100-year-old Barbara. Following Saturday morning’s parade, Barbara was also awarded the Elegance Trophy, while the Navy Sailing Sport, which participated with four boats (Stella Polare, Gemini, Penelope and Grifone) received the Prestige Award, presented to Marivela Director Captain Giuseppe Cannatà .
