We have already told you about Raymarine ‘s new electronics instruments designed specifically for sailing, and specifically for racing. There is, however, one specific function that deserves further study. It is the SailPoint function , which processes data second by second and provides clear, timely, and immediate directions to correct the course and achieve the best possible performance for the boat.
So you know right away how you’re navigating
In very few words SailPoint is a function that allows you to display a crosshair and a red dot, representing the boat, and lets you know at a glance how the boat is sailing based on the polars. If the red dot fits perfectly in the crosshairs, it means the boat is sailing excellently, according to the polars entered into the system. In the Axiom display you can in fact enter the polar plan manually via an Excel file, or you can search for your boat in the database already in memory. If your boat is not in memory and you do not want to enter the data by hand, you can ask Raymarine to update the database. The indicator in this mode gives the figure of the angle with respect to the wind, if the red dot enters the center of the crosshair I am navigating at the best angle. In addition, the dynamic blue horizontal line provides immediately intelligible data on target speed. It becomes useful to know what is the maximum speed that the boat can reach under certain conditions, and thus to understand how much margin there is to improve one’s performance. Thanks to the SailPoint function, it is much easier to figure out how far you are from the maximum VGM (Velocity Made Good, i.e., the projection of speed on the wind axis) with both upwind and downwind gaits. From this screen you can also view waypoints (in racing typically buoys) with a clear and accurate indicator.
The SailPoint display is a new feature of the new Alpha remote displays designed for either bridge or mast mounting, horizontally or vertically. Available in 7- and 9-inch sizes, the displays come with a bracket for mounting on the mast and are touchscreen, but can also be fully set remotely, directly from the Axiom.
