Neapolitan youth competitive sailing is shining again. The summer has been a real success for the Reale Yacht Club Canottieri Savoia, from 2019 under the leadership of President Fabrizio Cattaneo della Volta, which this year celebrates the 130th year since its founding in 1893. We had Sports Vice President Enrico Milano tell us about all the achievements of his athletes.
All the successes of RYCC Savoie
Prominent among RYCC Savoia’s top athletes, supported by Sailing Advisor Penny Oliviero, is 15-year-old Maria Luisa Silvestri, European Optimist Champion in Thessaloniki, who also won the European Team Championship in Holland and finished third at the Italian Optimist Championship in Marina di Ravenna.
Among the boys, Andrea Tramontano won the Optimist World Team Championship in Spain’s Costa Brava, following last year’s European bronze.
In addition to Maria Luisa Silvestri and Andrea Tramontano, Carlotta Cangiano is also on the podium at the Italian under-16 ILCA 4 championship in Marina di Ravenna. And there’s even a champion in the Wing Foil, the inflatable wing that you hold in your hand and allows you to take advantage of the wind on any board. In this new discipline, which is increasingly making young people fall in love with sailing, 15-year-old Ernesto De Amicis is already at the top internationally, with an under-19 rainbow gold in his trophy cabinet.
130 years and not feeling it. In Naples the most important international regattas
RYCC Savoia, besides being one of the oldest and most prestigious clubs in Italy, is also very active in terms of organizing regattas and international sailing events, . Last January the Marcello Campobasso Trophy (Optimist) celebrated its 30th anniversary, while for “Le Vele d’Epoca a Napoli” it was the 20th edition. It was a somewhat special edition, because in addition to flanking a Riva rally, combining the glamour and charm of la dolce vita with the majesty of vintage sails, there was also a salute from the Frecce Tricolori to crown this anniversary.
In addition, in 2022 the Star Class, the Olympic “queen,” which had been missing in Naples since 2006, was seen again in Santa Lucia dock. But the 2023 season is not over yet. This year’s events continue with the international regattas of the 2K Team Racing circuit (Oct. 20-22), in which seven teams representing their respective yacht clubs from all over Europe will take part, as well as the ILCA Champions Cup (Oct. 26-29).
