Dan Lenard, the superyacht designer who co-founded the Nuvolari-Lenard studio, after having completed an Atlantic crossing in early 2019, without instruments or autopilot, with a “frankenstein” boat made by assembling pieces of boats at least a decade old, bought the VOR 70 Telefonica Black with the goal of turning it into a Grand Touring boat to promote sustainable sailing.
Dan Lenard. The new life of the VOR 70 Telefonica Black. From Racer to Gran Turismo
In its new incarnation, “Vela,” as the VOR 70 Telefonica Black has been renamed, will serve as an ambassador for the promotion of the “Vela Code” project, initiated by Dan Lenard in 2019 with his solo transatlantic sailing without any sailing equipment. The purpose of the project is to promote a code of behavior for the sailor, and more generally for anyone who goes to sea, that is sustainable. Not only the abolition of plastic on board but also the recovery and reuse of materials and, indeed, boats. Telefonica Black, which arrived in Trieste last week, will be converted from a super-performance racing boat to a Grand Touring boat, “a category unheard of in boating, ” comments Dan Lenard. “The intention is to turn Telefonica Black into a boat that can also be taken single-handed, although this is not its sole purpose. Today’s Maxis can accommodate a maximum of two passengers on board, without much room to maneuver. These boats are not suitable for taking out children, journalists and supporters, we We want our guests to experience a performance sail.”
Compared to a Swan 80 (with appendages the length will be similar) “Sail” will be about 3 tons lighter. If today Telefonica Black weighs 14 tons, after dry refitting it will weigh 2 tons more but fully loaded, in racing trim, with a small crew it will also be lighter than a VOR 70, which requires a crew of 14.
