Athena | The Project

Built by Sangermani Shipyards with mahogany planking,
Atena
is a sloop of 14.71 meters overall (LOA), 11.3 meters at waterline (LWL), and 4.2 meters at maximum beam. All numbers that, when compared to the lines, integrate it perfectly into the design landscape of the early 1970s, strong in thelate ’60s. In fact, the great spurts of the antecedent period are diminishing as maximum beams increase, hinting at a sternward retreat. This is the period of tapered appendages and early flush decks, iconic especially in the case of this project.

Born as Splash, Athena is indeed a Sangermani made of mahogany, but it is also the different twin of another large boat. Or rather, of another great model. Made to a design by Sparkman & Stephens, Athena is in fact the child of design No. 2079, the same design from which, in the same years, Nautor will spawn the iconic Swan 48 series. On both, despite natural differences, the innovations of the time are thus seen, among them the flush deck with anvil deckhouse, the first that, for Nautor’s Swan, would later become almost a trademark.

The Recent Years

After 16 years of “seclusion in a shed” -P. G. Cosmo tells us on the page dedicated to her-Athena finally saw the light again in 2020. Since this new beginning, cared for and pampered by a professional captain and owner in love, she has finally had major refits and improvements, always respectful of her origins, but able to bring her back to her glory. He is currently sailing again, for pleasure, in the waters of the Venice lagoon, participating in the many events dedicated to “classics” in Adriatic waters.
