for the Italians in the Class 40s and without a doubt it is a regatta that has left its mark. It could have been a resounding result for Italian sailing, which at one point dreamed of an all-Tricolor podium. That’s right, because this time it was not only Ambrogio Beccaria and Alberto Bona on Allagrande Pirelli and IBSA who were going strong, but also Andrea Fornaro on his debut with Influence 2, another Muse 40 like Beccaria’s. As we had told you, weighing on Bona and Beccaria’s ranking, however, was a two-hour early start penalty, which weighed on the Cherbourg finish.
Rolex Fastnet Race – Class 40, thrilling finish
Ambrogio Beccaria on Allagrande had rounded the Fastnet cliff in the lead, followed shortly after by Alberto Bona. The Milanese then attempted the “desperate” southern option, separating himself from the pursuers to try to make that “breakaway” necessary to make up for the 2-hour penalty, as the rest of the fleet was minutes behind in his wake. Option that did not pay off all the way: Allagrande came in second at the finish line, a handful of minutes later Everial of Erwan Le Draoulec, winner of the regatta. With the two-hour penalty Bogi slips to seventh place. Bona, who finished fourth across the line, is ninth in the standings adding up the two hours for OCS.
However, we were telling you about Andrea Fornaro, author of a great race, crewed by Edoardo Bianchi of Sangiorgio Marine and French Class 40 specialist Corentin Douguet. Influence 2 finished in third place at the Rolex Fastnet 2023, a career-best result for Andrea Fornaro since moving up to the Class 40s after his experience in the Mini 650. Also of note for Italy was the presence of Pietro Luciani aboard Dekuple as co-skipper, a boat that finished in second position.
Fornaro thus becomes to all intents and purposes the third Italian “bogeyman” in the Class 40s, awaiting the arrival of Alberto Riva with Acrobatica, for a Transat Jacques Vabre, departing in late October from Le Havre, that promises to have intense tricolor hues.
Rolex Fastnet Race – Awaiting IRC Winner.
There is great anticipation in Cherbourg to know which will be the winner of the IRC Overall ranking. In fact, the rating fleet will have its winner in the first boat of the overall IRC, which at the moment could be the Botin 52 Caro by Max Klink. Barring any surprises, this could be the winning boat in the Rolex Fastnet 2023 for the overall race trophy, followed by the Dutch of Team Jajo (VOR 65), and the Americans of Warrior Won (Tp 52).
