The Fastnet cliff south of Ireland.

Italian sailing prepares for another tough test, Saturday, July 22 at 1 p.m. The legendary race, the Rolex Fastnet Race, which from 2021 will be run on a new 695-mile course, gets underway. The start will always be from Cowes, Isle of Wight, and the first part of the course, up to the Fastnet Rock in southern Ireland, is the historic one. However, the second part changes, with the arrival no longer in Plymouth but in France, in Cherbourg.

Rolex Fastnet Race – Italy present

For the 2023 edition of the Rolex Fastnet Race, which as usual sold out within hours after registration opened, there are 442 boats starting. The Italian presence is significant, with 3 Class 40s out of 22 in this category. Our Sailors of the Year will be there, Ambrogio Beccaria on Allagrande Pirelli, for the occasion crewed by Nicolas Andrieu and photographer Martina Orsini.

Alberto Bona, on the other hand, will be paired with Francesca Clapcich, fresh winner of The Ocean Race. Andrea Fornaro, who races on an Allagrande Pirelli musa 40 sistership, will have Edoardo Bianchi, builder of the boat with Sangiorgio Marine, and Corentin Doguet aboard. It is precisely the Class 40s that promise to be one of the most interesting categories, not forgetting the presence of the Imoca 60s, where we find Giancarlo Pedote with Prysmian Group equipped with the new goils.

Then there will be the giant Ultim, and the many boats in the IRC fleet. Recall among other things that the overall victory of the regatta is awarded to the winner of the IRC overall ranking.

Rolex Fastnet Race – Tough Weather

As per tradition in this legendary race that has been run since 1925, weather is always a variable that can make the Fastnet unpredictable. In this edition, a first part of the race with a strong west-southwest wind seems to be established, with an exit from the English Channel that is expected to be stormy with winds even above 35 knots and a sea that will give the boats a hard time, It will be the phase where to preserve the boats, waiting for the situation to change in the second part of the race where, however, the wind could be variable in direction and intensity.
