So long tops in the propeller. Goodbye, too, to the nightmare of fishing lines, seaweed, nets and plastic twisted around shovels. Yanmar has come up with the ultimate solution, introducing the first “Rope Cutter blade” (Rope Cutter) that installs directly on the propeller drive shaft and eliminates the hazard almost instantly before serious problems occur. Thus avoiding disasters at berth or in navigation. And, more importantly, to some crew members having to lower themselves into the water to free the propeller by hand.
Ropes in the propeller, what is at risk
In fact, when the propeller comes into contact with semi-submerged objects, ropes and trash, these can wrap around the propeller/drive shaft, preventing it from rotating and making any engine maneuvering impossible. Twisting of lines in the propeller creates turbulence and drag, affecting boat speed and performance, and can cause bearings to overheat or damage seals. If not the total blocking of the transmission.

How Yanmar line cutter works
How, in detail, does the system work? Simple: it is a blade that resembles that of classic circular saws and is installed directly on the drive shaft behind the propeller. The blade rotates with the shaft and so cuts through anything that should get stuck between the blades and the shaft.
The Rope Cutter is offered as an option for new boats that decide to fit a Yanmar inboard but can also be easily retrofitted by requesting the part from the sales network.
Rope Cutter, where to buy it
For now, the Rope Cutter is designed for sailboats (monohulls or catamarans) equipped with Yanmar SD60 saildrive transmission with two- or three-blade fixed propellers, but it could be an applicable solution on a larger scale.
The SD60 is a sail drive designed and developed by Yanmar, available with two bell sizes for compatibility with 3JH5E, 3JH40, 4JH5E, 4JH45, 4JH4-TE, 4JH57 and 4JH80 engines. The Yanmar SD60 Rope Cutter is available now from its dealer network (such as https://www.cartello.eu). For more information, visit www.yanmar.com/marine.
