Among outboard engine manufacturers is a brand that has always been synonymous with “Made in Japan” quality and reliability. We are talking about Tohatsu, a company founded in 1922 that recently celebrated (in 2022) its 100th anniversary and produces outboard engines of all sizes, with a full range from 2.5 to 140 hp.
Tohatsu – 101 years of history, 65 years of outboards
In particular, the Japanese brand has been on the outboard engine scene for more than 65 years and over time has established itself as one of the most important manufacturers in the market. The entire Tohatsu range is covered by a seven-year warranty, certifying the absolute reliability of the manufacturer. As for the outboard segment for tenders, Tohatsu’s small- to medium-sized range is a benchmark. Portable engines ranging from 2.5 to 6 hp, the most popular for powering the tender, are super-reliable four-stroke outboards. Over time they have also become appreciated for some innovative features, such as handles that make them easier to carry or the ability to store the engine in three different positions without fear of oil spills.
Given the increasing popularity of XXL tenders, Tohatsu has studied suitable, lightweight engines and recommends its 15- and 20-hp outboards in such cases. They are the lightest engines in their class (43 kg), and thanks to electronic fuel injection they also enable lower fuel consumption for the same power output compared to a conventional carbureted outboard.
Highly appreciated by the market is the 5-horsepower LPG-powered outboard, which, thanks to its 5-kg propane tank, offers a range of as much as 5 hours and allows entry inside some protected areemarines.
