Five comfortable used boats from 11.28 to 13.56 m
These are five thoroughbred used boats, a good investment. We present them in ascending order of length. A safe used car: guarantees the Sailing Newspaper!
Swan 371 – 11.28 m – Timeless Classic Boat
We begin with the first of the used boats for sale in our marketplace. A “thoroughbred” boat, since we are talking about a Swan 371 (11.28 x 3.46 m) that New Zealand designer Ron Holland designed for Nautor Swan in 1979.
One of the first designs, this is 1979, by Ron Holland for Nautor, after Sparkman & Stephens and before German Frers who still signs the Swan boats.
A distinctive and connoisseur boat, you can tell that Holland adapted to the requirements of the Swan construction and aesthetic canon of that period: with good success. Eighty-seven hulls were made from 1979 until they went out of production in the mid-1980s.
Interiors include two double cabins (one aft port, one V-shape forward), a single aft starboard, and saloon sofas that convert into two additional berths.
The model we offer, which can be seen in Alghero, is from 1980 is maniacally kept and the interesting thing is that the owner also evaluates permutations. A timeless Classic Boat.
USED BOATS. Elan 410 Performance – 12.28 m – Fast and “comfy”
Do you want a comfortable cruising boat, but one that can also go hard in racing? The second of the boats used in today’s review may be for you. We are talking about an Elan 410 Performance (12.28 x 3.83 m) designed by Rob Humphreys, “fetish” designer of the Slovenian shipyard and in production from 2007 to 2012.
So, a boat designed for those who love the thrill of pure sailing and want to have fun in the “up” adjustments, a true wind-powered machine that makes you forget about using the engine with a puff of air but which, in 30 knots of wind and a formed sea, passes the wave smoothly and powerfully.
The deck plan meets the requirements of dual use cruise-racing, facilitating circulation even with large crews, ensuring the necessary efficiency in maneuvering. The mainsail sheet, split German style, runs hidden under the deck, and the genoa trolleys are adjustable directly from the cockpit.
Substantial storage volume is complemented by a dedicated compartment for a life raft. The interior layout includes three cabins and one or two bathrooms. Room sizes are good, except for the aft cabins where one suffers from the presence of the rudder wheel recess at the bottom of the bunks.
The model for sale, which you can visit in Sardinia, is from 2008 and is equipped with every convenience (even a self-tacking jib).
Hallberg-Rassy 41 – 12.50 m – Comfortable as a home
We continue with a super boat from the late 7o’s that still retains much of its value today, aided by its unparalleled solid construction. A Hallberg-Rassy 41 (12.50 x 3.61 m), in production from 1975 to 1981 is the third of the boats used under the lens. It is the yard’s flagship of the late 1970s, ketch-rigged (two-masted) totally designed to take to the sea without worry.
One of the most classic Hallberg Rassy of the first generation, the Nordic-style generation, before the turnaround that occurred when the Swedish shipyard’s designs were entrusted to the capable hands of Argentinian German Frers. Produced from 1975 to 1981 in 105 examples, it is a 12-meter designed by Olle Enderlein of Sweden with a two-masted ketch sail rig with a heavy displacement, as much as 10,000 kilograms, a long keel fishing m. 1.84 m and separate rudder with skeg.
But under sail, its performance is not poor; on the contrary. In sustained wind it sails very well and even in light wind it does well, as long as there is not too much wave. Credit is also due to the beautiful 84-square-meter plan with a 17-meter-high main mast and bowsprit that allows for increased sail area for the jib. Think that a Hallberg-Rassy 41, a few years ago, succeeded in the historic feat of winning the Giraglia.
Strong point, then, is the sheltered center cockpit and the interior with a beautiful aft cabin with direct passage to the center saloon. Two beautiful cabins forward and aft, a large saloon with sofas that convert into additional bunks, two bathrooms, a large chart table opposite a U-shaped galley.
The Hallberg Rassy 41 was powered in the original version by a powerful 75 or 100 hp with a range of as much as 460 liters of diesel fuel and 560 liters of water.
The model under review, which can be seen in Greece, is from 1978 but underwent constant refitting from 2001 to 2022. The engine, from 2007, is a 75-horsepower Volvo Penta. The Hallberg-Rassy 41 sleeps six and has two bathrooms.
USED BOATS. Sun Odyssey 42.2 – 12.80 m – Exquisitely cruiser
We continue with the fourth of the used boats that on display in our classifieds market. An evolution of the famous Voyage 12.50, whose hull designed by Guy Ribadeau Dumas it retained almost unchanged, and sibling to the 42 CC (center-cockpit) version, the Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 42.2 (12.80 x 4.10 m) was produced in one hundred and sixty examples from 1995 to 2000.
At ease in sustained winds, struggles a bit in light winds. On deck, all maneuvers are on the deckhouse so as to keep the cockpit clear, equipped with a fixed table in front of the helm console. Easy access to the swim platform thanks to the lowerable seat that “opens” access to the stern.
Large sunbathing areas on deck. Inside, the large dinette converts (optionally) into a double bed, on the other edge a large galley at the side and the navigation area. Two aft cabins with one toilet. In the bow is a large master stateroom with its own bathroom.
This particular model is dated 1998 and you can go and see it in Friuli Venezia-Giulia. Powered by Yanmar 62 horsepower, this is the four-cabin, two-bathroom version.
Island Packet 420 – 13.56 m – You can live aboard it
We close with the last of the used boats for sale on our marketplace, which is an Island Packet 420 (13.56 x 4.34 m). A perfect model if you love to spend long periods on board.
A decidedly “Made in USA” boat that overseas is popular with cruisers and has won numerous awards (such as the “Best Full Size Cruiser” awarded by Cruising World in 2000), long keel with hanging rudder: performance is not the boat’s focus (13.6 tons total weight for a sail area 86 sq. m.), but comfort, safety and interior space.
A 1999 design by Robert K. Johnson for the American Shipyard, below deck it has two double cabins (one forward and one aft) and a berth, two bathrooms.
The model we offer, which can be seen in Emilia Romagna, is from 2002 and is powered by Yanmar 75 horsepower and has everything you need to live long on board: solar panels, air conditioning and heating, dinghy and outboard.
